The one thing I love about the Sunday paper is the ads. I mean, who doesn't? If there is one thing I'm always scouring, it's the beauty products that are marked with those "$$$ off" or "%" tags!
This week's island Longs sale includes CoverGirl's Lash Blast for only $4.99. This is my HG mascara so I made sure I picked up a couple.
After madly chucking the CoverGirl Lash Blasts into the cart in fear of a crazy Lash Blast lovin' mob ready to fight me for the remaining "Very Blacks", I dilly dallied around the aisles and picked up a few other things: Paddle & Point Applicators, a retractable lip brush, and (2) 1 oz. screw-top containers to house some natural skin care products I make (entries on those to come).
I decided to buy a lip brush because 1) I don't have one, and 2) I didn't exactly feel like spending $19+ dollars on one at MAC. So I opted for the QVS Retractable Lip Brush breaking the bank at around $4.
With firm nylon bristles...
and a detachable cover that pushes the brush out,...
this grips-like-a-pencil mechanism is made for lip product application. Although one thing that will suck is having to clean it all the time - joy!
Overall, the bristles on the QVS Retractable Lip Brush are very firm which I can see as being too firm for those used to or looking for something feathery. The thing I like about the firmness is that the lip brush applies product with precision. And as you glide the product over the pouters, the brush bristles fan out making the bristles more flexible (less firm) to evenly distribute the product.
I'm not at all picky on this devise so this will do for me.
I also picked up some Paddle & Point Applicators because when it comes to filling in my eyebrows, I feel like the regular Q-Tips are taking away too much with the ends of the cotton fraying out instead of being tightly wrapped around the shaft.
This dual-ended Q-Tip is shaped for versatility.
Equipped with a pointed end for getting in to the nooks and crannies of things...
to the rounded end made perfect for cleaning up the excess eyebrow powder left behind when doing my eyebrows.
And for less than $2, this is a definite must-have for any makeup bag!

MAC Product Releases: MAC Tendertone Swatches
MAC Cosmetics releases yet another Limited Edition Collection and you know what that means! I'm ready with my tykes to get them swatches! I got rather lucky this time around through since my mother-in-law was off and had to go to the mall to make a payment. I still rolled them to the store with me while she walked around Macy's, but at least I had comfort in knowing someone could roll them around if I needed the extra time.

PRICE
For $14.50 USD, you can own this lip conditioning item. Not necessarily out-of-price in comparison to most of MAC's lip products but definitely not budget friendly for those who are used to $0.99 Bonnie Bells.
PACKAGING
The MAC Tendertones are packaged in jars exactly like those of the MAC Paint Pot. This will probably not sit well with those who prefer tubes for sanitation purposes, but with these gems getting snatched up left and right, I think some have made peace with the packaging presentation.
SMELL/TASTE
For those that need their smell and taste senses satisfied, you'll be happy to know that these MAC Tendertones are served with strawberry-kiwi flavoring. It's almost like having a Jolly Rancher that conditions and glossifies your lips also! Mmmm... tasty.
PRODUCT CONSISTENCY
These Tendertones are far more emollient than the consistency of other lip balms that come to mind. It truly is like lipgloss in a jar or in MAC terms, similar to that of the MAC Lipgelee. Knowing that though, I'm wondering if it would have been better to offer this product in a tube since it does seem like it can get pretty messy if you don't own a lip brush.
THE EXPERIENCE
MAC Tendertones are really conditioning for the lips. I felt my lips being pampered big time with that Shea Butter. Combine that with a bit of color and a smooth application and I could easily sass up lipstick anytime. The strawberry-kiwi flavoring is a nice touch to the product. It really is a treat for the senses. I'm not one to maximize the benefit of flavored lip products since I'm not point on in licking my lips, but for the sake of review, it tasted really good. Think of Jolly Ranches for le puckers!
WHAT I LIKE
- The dual action of the product; balm and gloss in one!
- That some of the colors have pearl in them.
- The strawberry-kiwi flavoring is delicioso.
- It contains Shea Butter - I love products with Shea Butter.
- SPF protection.
- The packaging. Although I love those jars, I actually would rather have this product available in a tube because of the consistency. Getting more on my fingers than what needs to be or always having a lip brush on hand for application doesn't necessarily have me doing cartwheels. Ok, I'm lazy! Hah.
I can see why the collection was very likeable the first time around. The product is exactly like that of a gloss yet contains Shea Butter to help condition the lips and SPF 12 to protect. It glides easily on the lips with it's non-sticky formula and with different tints to choose from, I love the option on wearing it alone to directly nurture the lips or to top off my favorite lipstick for an added glossy sheen. Majority of the colors are made with either red, gold, or white pearl which adds extra sass that you'd only find in traditional lipglosses, not lip balms.
Should you run out and get one? If you don't have a lip conditioning product and like the thought of having a 2-in-1 lip balm/gloss product, then yes. Other than that, you probably already have some good lipgloss picks in your collection that could use some love.

Product Review: MAC Slimshine
MAC Slimshine Lipstick $14.50 USD
A new Lipstick combining creamy emolliency with a unique sheer colour pay-off. Finishes include cream, sparkling pearl and metallic. Provides the shine and moisturizing comfort of a gloss but with a smooth, non-sticky finish. Distinctive on and off. Comes packaged in its own stylish extra-long lipstick case. 2.3 g / 0.08 us oz
PRICE
At $14.50 a pop for these skinny suckers, I actually think that it is a very decent buy for a high-end cosmetic lipstick. You are however, getting less product than most of MAC's lip products (ranging from 0.10 oz to 0.17 oz) AND paying $0.50 more than most of MAC's lip products which tend to retail for about $14.00 USD.
But because the formula of this product is more emollient than your standard bullet-style lipstick, it was possibly the wiser choice to put this product in a slimmer casing where the tube would hug the product to keep it in tact and prevent it from shifting from application pressure.

MAC Slimshines are definitely designed and packaged for convenience.
They are about the same girth as my fingers and about a thumb width taller (if not a tad more) than my middle finger. Thinner lipstick casings may be preferable to some because regular bullet-style lipstick casings are a bit bulkier in the purse.
The slick feeling of the case is also a rather chic choice that MAC made in housing this product. For those that have fun touching things, you'll probably find yourself gliding your fingers unknowingly around this thang! Ahem, I speak from experience, hah.
My only gripe would be that the case does look susceptible to dents and dings. The material overall is fairly sturdy, but still thin enough to sustain some non-pretty damage if not carefully handled.

And for the MAC fans that cannot get enough of the MAC logo, you get the double-whammy feature with the Slimshines. On the outer case AND the lipstick revolver! How about that?!
Also included is the snapping mechanism that makes sure your hard earned $14.50 is kept indoors than outside the compound where we all know it's not safe for them to be playing.

MAC Slimshines seem to cast a sweet yet faint coffee aroma. I don't know if the rest are this way, but the Bare that I have is. When twisting up the lipstick and leaning in closer for an intimate encounter, you capture a whiff of metal because of the case but nonetheless, a very sweet and pleasant smell.
As for tasty lip smacking, I don't notice much taste other than regular saliva. Oooh,... sali-va (Homer Simpson style).
PRODUCT CONSISTENCY
I've heard from many that the MAC Slimshines are a cross between lipstick and a lipgloss and this is very much the case. It glides on smoothly just like cream, rubs nicely between the lips, shines like a gloss, sheer but pigmented, and leaves lips moisturizes without the non-sticky texture. Definitely my kind of lipstick!
PRODUCT WEARABILITY
Everyone and their mom probably knows my lips are no good without MAC's Lip Conditioner under it. Whether it be rocking the lips in their natural state or riding cozy with lipstick or lipgloss, MAC Slimshines are no exception to the rule. Yes, Lip Conditioner has to hold Bare's hand, but better the "buddy system" when crossing the road than road kill looking lips!
Although the Slimshines are sheerly pigmented, I believe that color is buildable to a lightly-opaque setting. Not truly opaque like cream lipsticks but not like the cheap wannabe pigmented lipsticks that go on like watercolors.
The Slimshines were a huge hit the first time around because of the formulation. But the biggest grumble was the actual wear time. Slimshines are definitely creamy but unlike lipstick, the color doesn't sink into the lips which sometimes helps in wearing the color longer. And because the formula is creamier than most, this means that product transfer is more likely to happen. So if you need that cup of coffee in the morning or snack on those conference danishes, better to apply a Slimshine once breakfast has made it's rounds.
Despite that these gals don't sit still for long, filling in the lips with lipliner beforehand is optional. This will help to keep at least the color of the lipliner on even if the Teriyaki Chicken during lunchtime gets a little klepto with the Slimshine.
WHAT I LIKE
- The packaging of the product. It's professional looking.
- The moisturizing properties and that it glides on smoothly.
- There are 20 choices in colors to choose from.
WHAT I DISLIKE
- That I can't wear it on it's own. Wearing it with Lip Conditioner under makes it even more susceptible to transferring to anything the lips touch.
OVERALL
I definitely would like to pick up more Slimshine lipsticks. I really enjoy the sheer yet pigmented color payoff and even though I still need to use Lip Conditioner under, I can deal with it in having it's own wear time shorter than others. Being that this is a permanent MAC collection, that puts the anxiety of purchasing them all aside as they'll be available when I'm ready to get them - thank goodness!

- you're lips need moisturizing but want something a bit fancier than the normal chapstick or lipbalm.
- you're down with the convenience of a lipstick/lipgloss 2 in 1.

Product Review: NYX Diamond Sparkle Lipgloss
NYX Diamond Sparkle Lipgloss $3-4
The one thing you have to love about NYX is the smashing deal that their products are only a few Washingtons. This means you can have guilt-free impulse shopping with the products of this brand.
PACKAGING
The Diamond Sparkle Lipgloss comes in a sophisticated acrylic-type squared off tubing with a sleek, black twist-off cap. And with any twist-off cap, more specifically those that are shaped anything other than circular, there's bound to be alignment issues when closed completely shut. NYX has snap features in place with their products so no alignment issues here.
It is also equipped with a sturdy, slightly angled sponge tip wand that accompanies smooth application.
If the smell of plastic doesn't tickle your fancy, then you just might have to pass with this. It does have a pretty displeasing essence of plastic as the sponge tip wand touches your lips but the taste nor smell lingers. Probably not a majority favorite but if you can get over it, then you're good.
As far as taste goes, it's not going to get the best taste award either. It has the same taste of plastic as the smell entails.
PRODUCT CONSISTENCY
This smooth, non-sticky formula works better for my preference. I am not a fan of sticky lipglosses nor ones whose thickness in formula resembles that of butter, so this one plays just right.
I'm always apprehensive about products that have shimmer in it, or in this case "sparkle", because there's always a tendency for the formula to turn a bit chunky upon initial application leading to a lip full of dryness. Surprising enough, I found this particular lipgloss to be somewhat moisturizing.
PRODUCT WEARABILITY
On it's own, the longevity of the product can hang decently for a lipgloss, but I wouldn't consider it the leader of the pack. Although it does have a beautiful sparkling glass look to it and sheer but buildable coverage, the day end result of this on my dry lips left me in definite need of an outer lip exfoliation. I do not touch-up lipgloss the second color fades away for fear of building glob on my lips, but rather touch-up once the product has clearly absorbed into my lips noted by the the semi-stickiness felt when I blot my lips together.
However, with MAC's Lip Conditioner under it, it did MUCH better in regards to maintaining moisture and keeping the dryness at bay. With Lip Conditioner under, I can re-apply the Diamond Sparkle Lipgloss without fear of additional lip exfoliation at the end of the day.
WHAT I LIKE
- The packaging of the product. It's professional looking.
- The wet look with the sparkle.
- The price.
- Doesn't make my lips dry out with Lip Conditioner under.
WHAT I DISLIKE
- The plastic taste/smell of it.
OVERALL
I wouldn't mind having a few of these floating around in my diaper bag. The website shows that there are 15 different colors, so now the only decision is, which one will I get next? :)

Product Review: Alba's Coconut Cream Lip Balm
Alba Botanica is an environmentally conscious company founded in 1989 and is one of the leading product lines of Avalon Natural Products. With products from skin care to sun care, the company prides itself on "reducing [their] footprint so that [their] company helps to preserve and heal the planet, now and for future generations". Their products are also made of 100% Vegetarian ingredients and not tested on animals. The facilities are even 100% Solar Powered!
Alba Botanica Coconut Cream Lip Balm $3-4
Just like many other lip products found at the convenient store, the price for this is no different. My purchase was between this and Blistex's Lip Infusion series (a few dimes cheaper) but I'm always drawn to tropical anything.
PACKAGING
It comes packaged in a standard chapstick case setting with the product twist function just above the label instead of at the bottom like mosts chapsticks. And since I'm always on the lookout for tampering when purchasing my products, I was pleased to see that the actual case was entirely sealed in plastic wrapping in addition to coming in the cardboard box.
Because this is a lipbalm, there's not much product to salvage for taste since it does a pretty steady job of sitting on your lips instead of in your mouth. But I do admit that the smell does make you smack your lips a few times into thinking it actually tastes like a tropical drink.
But for you ladies whose lip product purchase requirements include the smell factor, you'll be pleased to know that Pina Colada is in the house for this one. Yeh-yay! Raise the roof! And I say Pina Colada because it didn't seem like coconut was going along on this one. Someone in the production team must have been tipsy on their own Pina Colada, slipping a little pineapple into the product!
PRODUCT CONSISTENCY
Definitely a lipBALM. Thicker in formula than your everyday chapstick with resin-type properties.
WHAT I LIKE
- I really like the smell of it. It's a great switch up from the normal strawberry flavored lip products out there.
- The packaging had an extra jacket of tamper security.
- A good "just exfoliated my lips" type product.
- Its only a few Washingtons.
- No petrolatum, mineral oil, or parabens.
- 82% Certified Organic Ingredients
WHAT I DISLIKE
- Sadly, this lipbalm does not work well long-term for my easily dried out lips. The resin texture of the product is great after I have just exfoliated my lips, but as the minutes wear on, it doesn't sink into my lips to keep them moisturized. Considering that MAC's Lip Conditioner is my dry lip remedy, this will have to be a diaper bag backup.
OVERALL
I can't use this product on a regular basis, if ever! My lips get that rough, dry skin edge to them that applying more of this on top would just be leaving claw prints on the actual lipbalm. I will not be purchasing this again but hopefully finding it a good home in the diaper bag unless I can sneak it into Hubbo's pants pocket.

But deep down, I'm a simple beer girl. As for non-alcoholic, I am all for a Raspberry/Strawberry Italian Soda with cream. Mmmm, yum! Does anyone have a favorite drink(s)? Could be alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

Product Review: NYX Lips Lipsticks
I've never jived well with lipsticks because my lips have always resulted in dry ugliness. Peeling like a ripe banana and dry like a desert, I opted to stay clear of lipsticks. And now with the tykes too cute to let go of, I'd rather my lips be conditioned than colored so I can upkeep the kisses. But no matter the excuse, I can't deny my inner self that could still go for some color once in awhile.
NYX has 5 lipstick lines: Black Label Lipstick, Tinted Lip Spa, Diamond Sparkle Lipstick, Round Lipstick, and NYX Lips. Although I wasn't convinced with their Diamond Sparkle Lipstick line, too textured with sparkle, I still had hope for the remaining lipstick lines. In my quest, I discovered NYX Lips.
Right away I can tell if a lipstick will not work or if it has potential. After swatching a few of the colors from this lipstick line at the store, I was convinced that they had potential and only needed a test run to determine the final verdict. Well, the results are in, and this is definitely a winner for me!
NYX has 5 lipstick lines: Black Label Lipstick, Tinted Lip Spa, Diamond Sparkle Lipstick, Round Lipstick, and NYX Lips. Although I wasn't convinced with their Diamond Sparkle Lipstick line, too textured with sparkle, I still had hope for the remaining lipstick lines. In my quest, I discovered NYX Lips.
Right away I can tell if a lipstick will not work or if it has potential. After swatching a few of the colors from this lipstick line at the store, I was convinced that they had potential and only needed a test run to determine the final verdict. Well, the results are in, and this is definitely a winner for me!
NYX Lips Lipstick $4-5
Definitely a drugstore steal! And when they go on sale for 25% off, then you can get more bang for your buck. I know I keep surfing the Sunday ads for the green light to stock up. I honestly don't think the world is aware of this wonderful brand of respectable products.
PACKAGING
The NYX Lips Lipsticks come in a cute sleek black casing with a peep-through top for those that don't know the colors by name. I know I've owned some guessing game ones before. You know the deal. You grab the lipstick, quickly glance at the bottom (why do we do that? we already don't know them by name), pop the cap, twist, make the disappointed close-mouthed "mmff" sound because it wasn't the right one, and proceed to grab another. So the peep-through top is a great feature until your lipstick starts winding down to the bottom in which case you can't see it through the top anymore. But by then, hopefully you'll know the name and won't have to look.
The case also features a built-in snap so you know the outer casing isn't going to secretly elope with another purse-hold item leaving the inside of your purse like a kindergarten fridge drawing. Ever had lipstick melt in your purse? At least with these, the meltdown will be contained within the case. *wipes forehead*
WHAT I LIKE
These affordable bad boys are very moisturizing to the lips. Like I said, I can tell right away if a lipstick will not work and majority of that is due to how it makes my lips feels from the get-go. Right away, the lipstick smoothly glided along my lips with no hesitation or resistance. I continued on my regular day (eating, talking, etc...) and to my amuse, my lips stayed conditioned! And not like an hour later, but HOOOURS later! Like any other lipstick, it slowly wore off, but the fact that my lips weren't looking like shriveled California Raisins or dry says a LOT to me.
This line also comes in a wide variety of colors. And according to the company site, 60 to be exact. That means I can have quite a selection going on without breaking the bank! Yay for the color obsession and yay for the funds.
And it's probably nothing, but I really like that the case is black. It gives it a professional high-end look. Very chic!
WHAT I DISLIKE
Unfortunately, I'm not feeling the shimmered colors that are a part of this collection. The shimmer seems a bit chunky which not only looks funky but also throws off the smoothing and conditioning properties of why I love this line so much in the first place. Better off getting just the regular colors with no sheen and then pairing it with a pretty dazzling lipgloss on top.
OVERALL
I'm glad I stumbled on this. Aside from the couple of shimmer ones that I own, I seriously feel like I can't edify this line enough. All I can say is, at a few bucks a pop it's worth a try.

Product Review: MAC Lip Conditioner SPF 15
If you're like me, then you're cursed with lips that dry out easily. Lipstick and lipglosses are not your friend and neither are most chapsticks available on the market. At the end of the day, the ones that don't work for me (which is a lot!) have me screaming bloody murder.
I'm always skeptical about lip products because of the feeling I get when I wear them. They go on nice and glossy, gorgeous the first 10 minutes then it's like one of those relationships that go south rather quickly. The skin on my lips all of a sudden turns drier than the desert on the hottest day of the year then slowly scales itself away leaving me at my wits end trying to peel away the disgusting layers that would definitely send people running in the other direction.
I would always get cute lipglosses and lipsticks as presents but would have to tuck them away in a drawer because I just couldn't handle the results. Blotting my lipstick made my lips seem more prone to the drying effect but really was only an excuse for the lipstick to tear at my skin and dry it out quicker. I eventually omitted the blotting step altogether and still do it just out of a forced habit.
As a result, Aquaphor, Soft Lips, or Vaseline were the only things that I could wear to save the life of my lips in the dryout death match. While at a MAC store last year, I asked for a sample of their Lip Conditioner. And of all the samples I got that day, that was truly a winner for me.

Not your ordinary drugstore Blistex or Carmex so it does cost a fairly shiny penny. But since it does work for my lips, I'm willing to shell out the dollar bills to get my grabby hands on one. Although I'm not gonna lie that I wouldn't mind if it were a few dollars cheaper.
PACKAGING
Small and lightweight enough to grab and sleek enough to be proud of. The Lip Conditioner comes in this cute 0.5 fl.oz. screw-top container. Easy for grabbing and tossing into my purse (aka a diaper bag) with a semi-grip-like top for easy screwing (hah).
WHAT I LIKE
I enjoy rubbing my lips together after applying and knowing that my lips are well moisturized. And not for 10 minutes, but long enough even after the product has absorbed it's still doing its job. I can sleep better at night knowing that the scales are under control. I also like the vanilla scent of the conditioner - light but not overpowering. It reminds me of the white Tic-Tacs. I do like the fact that I can use it sparingly also because a few rubs around the container, and I'll be good for a while. It's lightweight yet strong enough to provide decent lip coverage.
WHAT I DISLIKE
The price. Although it works, $13.00 will turn most away. Like I said, if it was a couple bucks cheaper, my smile would be wider. But then again, if I can get this container to last me a few months then I guess at a few dollars a month ain't so bad.
OVERALL
I dig it and will be repurchasing another one once I scape that last bit out of this container. I use it before I apply my lipstick just for added protection, after I get out of the shower, after washing up in the morning, and sometimes apply it again during the afternoon. I exfoliate my lips on a daily basis and having this on my lips is very soothing.
