My Work: Arianne Stays Cool Then Turns Up The Heat!

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of events, which is why the posts have been sporadic, so to get away from the chaos I took some time to do some portfolio work.

I was lucky enough to spend some time with Arianne, a co-worker of mine, who was willing to help me document some of my work for my makeup portfolio. This girl is already naturally gorgeous sans makeup and enhancing those features with a couple different looks was just tons of fun.

In this first look, I decided to play with her favorite color - green. For my tanner sisters out there that are still a bit hesitant on the thought of playing with greens, teals, and blues, this look is proof that even us brown honeys can pull off a daring color combo.

Greens compliment Arianne's skin nicely, which will explain why she loves the color so much. And with the island weather being rather good lately, keeping the colors cool just seemed suiting.

I really enjoyed both pieces although I have to say that I do love how the gold base of MAC Cash Flow paint pot peeped through the silver (MAC Electra) in the second look. Stunning in the real! Isn't she a doll?!?!

FOTD: Just Call Me A Buff'd Cosmetics Spokesperson!

I know I'm not alone in getting excited when it comes time to play with makeup. Isn't it a girl's dream? And since I was recently sent a handful of mineral eye shadows to play with from Jennifer Burns, the owner of Buff'd Cosmetics, the excitement is only beginning.

Staring at all the colors she sent is almost mesmerizing but alas, your girl was at the bathroom drawing board and eventually popped the idea for this particular look. I'll admit I was a bit hesitant to use the Buff'd Eyebrow Mattes in Midnight because I thought it would be too dark, but after using it to fill-in my eyebrows, I really do like it! I actually built it up pretty dark because I didn't realize how much was on my brush (tapping is crucial, lol!), but now I know that the color intensity is buildable.

This look is comprised mostly of Buff'd products.

So now that you've seen a few of the Buff'd products in action, here's how to replicate it!

Brushes You'll Need:

1. MAC 239

Eye Products You'll Need:

1. MAC Layin' Low p/p (or Painterly p/p will work just as well)
   
2. Buff'd Devine Pure Pigment
3. Buff'd Forest Mineral Eye Shadow

5. Buff'd Fairy Tale Mineral Eye Shadow
6. Mixing Medium (click here to make your own!)
   
7. MAC Blacktrack f/l

How To Get The Eyes:

1. Using a firm bristle brush, you'll want to apply a neutral base like Painterly Paint Pot (I used MAC Layin' Low Paint Pot) to your eyelids to ensure the staying power of the eyeshadow as well as crease prevention. I used a MAC 252 for this as the head of the brush is larger and I normally use the larger head for more neutral base colors.
2. Now using the smaller version of the MAC 252, apply mixing medium (I used MAC FIX+) onto the head of a MAC 242 to dampen the bristles. You don't want the brush soaking wet, so if you dip/mist the brush too much, just lay the edge of the bristles on a tissue or napkin to absorb the excess liquid.
3. I picked up some Buff'd Devine Pure Pigment and apply the wet powder to the inner half of the eyelid.
4. Using this same method (also known as foiling), I apply Buff'd Forest Mineral Eye Shadow to the outer half of the eyelid concentrating more color on the most outer part of the eyelid and bringing it into the Devine laid down in Step 3.
5. With a clean and dry eyeshadow brush like the MAC 239, pick up Buff'd Devine Pure Pigment and Buff'd Forest Mineral Eye Shadaow, and apply them each dry over their corresponding placements on your eyelid. This will help to "set" the wet eyeshadow to ensure the eyeshadows are longlasting. Because we are using mineral eyeshadows, there tends to be a lot of fallout. So before applying the color to the eyes, be sure to tap off all the excess - it can get messy on your lids when you don't. Blend where needed.
6. Time to concentrate on the crease. Pick up Buff'd Indigo Eye Shadow with a tapered blending brush, such as the MAC 222, and blend the eyeshadow in the crease diffusing the edges of Devine and Forest. The key is a soft, small circular motion. This eyeshadow was applied dry.
   
7. Lay down MAC Beige-ing Shadestick along the lower lashline. This will help the eyeshadow adhere better.
8. With a pencil brush like the MAC 219, place Buff'd Indigo Eye Shadow over the MAC Beige-ing Shadestick in Step 7.
9. Highlight your browbone at anytime. I used Buff'd Fairy Tale Eye Shadow (not yet released) with a MAC 239.
10. Add MAC Blacktrack Fluidline with an angled brush (I love to apply this with a MAC 208) to the upper lashline and MAC Graphblack Technakohl to the waterline.
    
11. Curl eyelashes and add your favorite mascara!

FOTD: It's A Little Bright In Here

When I look at the colors I used in this FOTD, it reminds me of a parakeet because of the bright colors of their feathers. Well, actually. Now that I think about it, I felt and looked like Mimi from The Drew Carey Show :/ It's been a long time since I've worn something this "loud" and I was definitely feeling weird wearing it out in public - yah, call me crazy to even take it outside the front door, but I did!

It didn't come out as good as I wanted it to, but I was running out of time to be more innovative with the colors I had already laid down.

I personally don't necessarily think this look is all that inspiring, but here's how to get it in case you want to play around with your colors:

Brushes You'll Need:

1. MAC 239
2. MAC 252 (or 242)
   
3. MAC 222 (or 224)
4. MAC 209 (or 208)
   

Eye Products You'll Need:

1. Chrome Yellow e/s
2. Steamy e/s
3. Jewel Blue e/s
4. Freshwater e/s
5. Deep Truth e/s
   
6. Daisy Chain e/s (or highlighter of your choice)
7. Blacktrack f/l
8. Graphblack Technakohl
   
9. Mascara
   

How To Get The Eyes:

1. Use a firm bristle brush like the MAC 252 and apply Layin' Low p/p to your eyelids. Layin' Low p/p is from the Fafi Collection but Painterly p/p will work just as well. I chose to have just a flesh colored base for this look.
2. With an eyeshadow brush such as the MAC 239, place Chrome Yellow e/s on the inner lid depositing color near the lashline and pulling the color towards the crease. This allows for maximum color to adhere closer to the eye and also making blending in the crease easier.
3. With the same brush, put Steamy e/s in the middle of the lid right next to Chrome Yellow e/s. Sweep the color into the Chrome Yellow e/s. This automatically blends the two together.
4. Now grab some Jewel Blue e/s and fill in the outer lid.
5. I used a MAC 222 to blend Freshwater into the crease. Starting from the outer lid and working my way to the inner lid, I firmly grip the brush and with gentle circular motions, blend the color in.
6. With only a couple of taps of the MAC 222 into Deep Truth e/s, you'll have more than enough to deepen the outer crease. Make sure the eyeshadow is tapped in at the very tips of the bristles and only tap a couple times into the pan at a time. It's easier to go back and get more color to build, than to have taken too much to begin with.
7. Highlight your brow bone at any time. I used MAC Daisy Chain e/s with the MAC 239 and blend downward into the crease.
8. Line the top lashline with Blacktrack f/l and a MAC 209 brush. I was trying a pointed-tip brush instead of my HG MAC 208 angle brush just to see if I had a change of heart on it - nope!
9. Add Graphblack Technakohl to the waterline.
   
10. Curl eyelashes and add your favorite mascara!

Although it's warm here on the island, it looks groggy outside. I hope you have clear skies outside your window today :)

FOTD: Mutiny Hits The Club

Speaking of club, it's been DAYS since I've been to one! That thought alone makes me really feel my age *sigh*

I bought Club e/s a while back because its duo-chromatic abilities are to die for. But sadly, it only gets used when I'm feeling the teals/greens. So consider this an ode to Club *clink*

Want to try it out?

Brushes You'll Need:

1. MAC 252 (or 242)
2. MAC 239
3. MAC 222 (or 224)
4. MAC 219
5. MAC 208
   

Eye Products You'll Need:

1. Moss Scape p/p
2. Mutiny p/m
3. Zonk Bleu! e/s
4. Club e/s
5. Juxt e/s
6. Beige-ing s/s
7. Blacktrack f/l
   

How To Get The Look:

1. Using a MAC 252, cover lid with Moss Scape p/p.
2. Apply Mutiny p/m over lid with MAC 239.
3. On the outer part of the lid, add Clue e/s with MAC 239.
   
4. Blend the crease using Zonk Bleu! e/s and a MAC 222.
5. Using a pencil brush like the MAC 219, apply Juxt e/s to the inner tear ducts.
6. Using Beige-ing s/s as a base for eyeshadows on the lower lashline, apply Mutiny p/m to the inner lower lashline and Club e/s to the outer lower lashline using the MAC 219.
7. Line the upper lashline and waterline with Blacktrack f/l.
8. Finish off by curling lashes and adding mascara.
   

Although the pictures don't show it, I ended up using Bare Slimshine for this look. When out of time, I turn to Bare. I'm so glad the Slimshines are a permanent line because they seriously are convenient!

FOTD: Fancy Mint Purple

When I hauled my first MAC eyeshadows, amongst them were Deep Truth, Nocturnelle, Steamy, Cranberry, and Goldmine. I believe it was fate that brought us together because no matter what other new colors I add to my makeup family, I will find myself comfortably reaching for those in a hot second.

Of my original picks, Steamy and Nocturnelle (again!) make their way to the FOTD cuts.

Brushes You'll Need:

1. MAC 252 (or 242)
2. MAC 239
3. MAC 222 (or 224)
4. MAC 219
   

Eye Products You'll Need:

1. Jardin Aires pigment
2. Steamy e/s
3. Nocturnelle e/s
4. Carbon e/s
5. Shroom e/s (or highlighter of your choice)
6. Beige-ing s/s
7. Blacktrack f/l
8. Graphblack Technakohl

Additional Items:

1. MAC FIX+ for foiling
   

How To Get The Look:

1. Foil Jardin Aires pigment with FIX+ over the lid (MAC 252).
2. Smooth Steamy e/s over Jardin Aires pigment (MAC 239).
3. Blend the Steamy e/s edges with Jardin Aires pigment in the crease (MAC 222).
   
4. Add Nocturnelle e/s to the outer lid (MAC 239).
5. Follow through by blending Nocturnelle e/s into the crease concentrating it in the outer half (MAC 222).
   
6. Starting from the very outer corner of the lid, create more depth with Carbon e/s by drawing a line only to 1/3 of the outer crease and blending it outwards (MAC 219).
7. Apply Beige-ing s/s to lower lashline. Will act as a base for eyeshadow.
   
8. Line the entire lower lashline with Nocturnelle e/s and just the outer lower lashline with Carbon e/s (MAC 219).
   
9. Highlight at any moment during this process then finish the look off by lining eyes (upper lashline and waterline) pairing it with false eyelashes (optional), a plum blush, and nude lips.

FOTD: It's A Rollickin' Moonflower Kind Of Day!

I decided it was time again to play outside the color box. Haven't done something bold or bright in a while so this one's for my homies!

MAC Rollickin' paint pot was used as a color enhancing base for this look. With MAC Moonflower e/s all over the lid, I blended Juxt e/s into the crease and deepened the outer V with Deep Truth e/s. Highlighted with none other than Shroom e/s et voila!

FOTD: Heatherette... Here I Come!

Heatherette for MAC is one of MAC's (many) collections that has sent people through the roof. Although I thought it was a hit or miss release, I personally wasn't as floored as I wish I was. But I did manage to walk away with the Heatherette Eyeshadow Trio 1.

In this lovely hot pink bubblegum casing encloses Hoppin' (frosty baby pink), Mood Ring (light sea green with teal specks), and Cloudburst (smoldering black with green reflects) which is what I used to combat this look for the eyes. I selected Fafi's Perky Paint Pot as my color enhancing base and highlighted with Shroom eyeshadow, a permanent MAC product. Feeling Beauty Powder Blush enhances the cheeks while the Scuplt & Shape Duo (Shadester/Lightsweep) join forces to contour and highlight. Capping off the look, I used NYX's Aphrodite Lipstick.

FOTD: Rollickin' Some Shimmermoss? Why not!

If MAC Shimmermoss or Parrot give you butterflies in your tummy, then you better get your paws on Rollickin' Paint Pot from the Fafi collection! Rollickin' is the paint pot version of those two eyeshadows which means that shades of green, blue, and everything in between will be brought out when used over it.

It is a great color to showcase especially with Spring entering the picture. My only gripe about the paint pot is that it kind of chunks up instead of spreading evenly. Now, that could be because my paint pot may have slightly dried out. But in any case, the solution is to apply a little more product using a dabbing deposit motion to ensure even distribution. If really dry in the pot, just add a bit of mixing medium or add moisturizer to your brush.

I blended Shimmermoss e/s out by placing Zonk Bleu! e/s in and above the crease using a 217 brush. After creating some depth in the outer V with Club e/s, I neutralized Zonk Bleu! e/s a bit more by washing Soft Brown e/s above the crease with the same 217 blending brush.

After all was created and done, we grabbed pizza and frolicked on over to Old Navy. For you mamacitas in the house, they are having a 40% off kids and baby's sale so get on it!

So I guess it's safe to say that everyone is slowly breaking into their Fafi loot. What is the verdict yo? Are we tossing the receipt or holding firmly onto it for some exchanging?

FOTD: Wraa... Parrot Over Delft ROCK... Wraa! (2 Versions)

I always thought parrots were cool. You could teach them to repeat what you say and I just thought it would be neat to hear one say the infamous "Polly wanna cracker" line. Its a little kid thing, what can I say.

I remember last year when Hubbo and I were viewing open houses since we were in the market to upgrade, and we visited this home that had a parrot in the garage. The real estate agent holding the open house warned us of the bird in the garage and told us that this was a unique bird. And a unique bird it was! It didn't have just any mouth, it had the mouth of a sailor! And boy did that bird spit out a decent amount of profanity. We thought it was so hilarious that we made another stop by the garage on the way out just to have one more good laugh before we left.

With all the hype that let out when information leaked that Parrot would be released with the Originals collection, I just had to know what it was all about. Many will attest to saving their money because Shimmermoss is similar (and part of the permanent line) to Parrot, but I'm the type that wants the original and not something close. This is my OCD when it comes to collecting anything.

In comparison, Parrot is more blue in hue while Shimmermoss is more green in hue. When swatched side by side, a meticulous eye can notice the difference. When pans are side-by-side, it's like taking a blind taste test between Coke and Pepsi. I'm all for Coke though and know that taste ANYWHERE! Lol.

The first version I did a couple of days ago. Since I have to accomplish my postings whenever there's a free moment (aka Big Boy K is sleeping!), I normally download, crop, then upload my pictures at night once the lullabies do their job. Then I keep the pictures drafted in my dashboard so I can work on it as time avails itself the following day(s).

Between then and now, I did another look that was almost exactly the same (Version 2). Just slightly tweaked. Still in the process of doing Base Trials, I decided to do another paint pot test. I still had my pots out from Version 1 still laying around my sad lack-of-a-traincase bathroom so I just grabbed them and redid the look, for the most part. Thought it would be neat to showcase nearly the same products just a slight variation to it.

And sadly for me, I tried my Ardell 108s but had to tear them off within 30 minutes because my sensitive eyes were getting irritated. The DUO glue contains Ammonium so I think that is why my eyes were teary and stinging. I was actually expecting the 108s to be longer, but when I put them on I was disappointed because they were the exact same length as my regular lashes. I was looking for something long and fancy, hah. Instead they just made my lashes look fuller which was still nice.

Anyhow, for those of you on the West Coast, I hope the nasty sky is letting up and peeping some sun. Just thinking of you folks and hope you're safe. That's my home too :)
