Skin Care: I Just Sold My Skin To The Garden Of Wisdom!

A couple months after MakeupFix.net was born, I took baby steps into changing my skin care routine around by slowly shying away from commercial cleansers and using natural ingredients. Going this route doesn't work for everyone but no matter what your skin care routine consists of, makeup needs a canvas to work with.

Some may recollect my post on the Oil Cleansing Method, which I started at the beginning of the year and even until now (nearly half a year later!) I'm still going strong in. I still use Kukui Nut Oil as an everyday moisturizer and over a month's time, I have also incorporated a Red Wine Vinegar/Aloe Vera Juice toner into my daily routine. My face gets spot treated with a Glacial Clay and Aloe Vera Juice mixture about once a week for those annoying to dry out any blemishes that appear and masked with the same mixture every couple of weeks because it can be a bit drying for my face as a whole. My more frequent weekly exfoliation is carried out using the Garden of Wisdom's Takrai Lemongrass Cleanser and Perfekt Pumpken Mask every few or so days, depending on how game my skin wants to be. And compared to others I've seen, my routine is the "simple" routine!

But with my Garden of Wisdom (GoW) samples running out and a thirst to incorporate more into my routine, I upped the ante BIG TIME!

I've been a lurker on the Garden of Wisdom Forum from time to time, but over the past couple of weeks, I've really been cramming my brain with knowledge on finding out which products would best suit my skin type and address certain concerns I have with it (you can say I'm targeting specifics now like smoothing out fine lines, more pore degunking, maintaining hydration, even out my skin texture, etc...).

From there I've been insanely filling my shopping cart with product recommendations from the forum participants at the Garden of Wisdom Store.

But what is the Garden of Wisdom? Markey Martin and Jen Flanagan are the brains behind the operation and in a nutshell, it's an information hub where you can learn tons about natural alternatives for skin care. Whether it's getting help on formulating your own recipes, reading testaments of what and how it's worked for others whose skin-types are all over the spectrum, or shopping for raw ingredients, this site is a blessing in disguise.

The Garden of Wisdom Forum is where all the priceless information is contained. It's a friendly and safe environment where even a newbie like myself was welcomed without intimidation. All the moderators on the forum are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and have an eager willingness to help everyone.

The Garden of Wisdom Store is an online shop that has an endless amount of raw ingredients (from essential oils to preservatives to packaging equipment) and a great place for those who like concocting their own mixtures. And within the store there's even a GoW Finished Products section dedicated to those who want to just pick ready-made products rather than doing the science behind it.

With the help of Lain (GoW Moderator and quite the enabler - BEWARE, she's better at adding to your cart than taking away!) and Li, another GoW Moderator, who has also been kind and insightful with her immense knowledge on the subject through her posts, responses, and blog, I got together a potential regime to take my routine to another level.

These are the products I'm looking forward to experimenting with once they arrive:

All this may sound and look a little foreign to those who are more familiar with commercial skin care products (I know it did to me!) but thank goodness for the Internet because that's where the "I don't know" slowly turns into knowledge gained.

If this subject is something that interests you but you don't know where to begin, or perhaps you're still hesitant and/or skeptical about the whole natural approach, definitely check out the forum and lurk the posts, or go in and introduce yourself! I'll warn you now that information overload is definitely a side effect to the wealth of information you'll find, but they are a great bunch who really know what they're talking about and are always willing to help.

I hope everyone is ready for yet another week :) I know I'm as ready as I'll ever be, hah.

Aloha,
Mrs. Lynne

Haul: Some Drugstore Nick-Nacks

The one thing I love about the Sunday paper is the ads. I mean, who doesn't? If there is one thing I'm always scouring, it's the beauty products that are marked with those "$$$ off" or "%" tags!

This week's island Longs sale includes CoverGirl's Lash Blast for only $4.99. This is my HG mascara so I made sure I picked up a couple.

After madly chucking the CoverGirl Lash Blasts into the cart in fear of a crazy Lash Blast lovin' mob ready to fight me for the remaining "Very Blacks", I dilly dallied around the aisles and picked up a few other things: Paddle & Point Applicators, a retractable lip brush, and (2) 1 oz. screw-top containers to house some natural skin care products I make (entries on those to come).

I decided to buy a lip brush because 1) I don't have one, and 2) I didn't exactly feel like spending $19+ dollars on one at MAC. So I opted for the QVS Retractable Lip Brush breaking the bank at around $4.

With firm nylon bristles...

and a detachable cover that pushes the brush out,...

this grips-like-a-pencil mechanism is made for lip product application. Although one thing that will suck is having to clean it all the time - joy!

Overall, the bristles on the QVS Retractable Lip Brush are very firm which I can see as being too firm for those used to or looking for something feathery. The thing I like about the firmness is that the lip brush applies product with precision. And as you glide the product over the pouters, the brush bristles fan out making the bristles more flexible (less firm) to evenly distribute the product.

I'm not at all picky on this devise so this will do for me.

I also picked up some Paddle & Point Applicators because when it comes to filling in my eyebrows, I feel like the regular Q-Tips are taking away too much with the ends of the cotton fraying out instead of being tightly wrapped around the shaft.

This dual-ended Q-Tip is shaped for versatility.

Equipped with a pointed end for getting in to the nooks and crannies of things...

to the rounded end made perfect for cleaning up the excess eyebrow powder left behind when doing my eyebrows.

And for less than $2, this is a definite must-have for any makeup bag!

Has anyone else done a little drugstore hauling lately?

Aloha,
Mrs. Lynne

Haul: My Little Presents From J.Lynne Cosmetics

I've been needing to fill a lipgloss void lately and in my attempt to become more natural-friendly, I decided to try out some of the Gloss FX Natural Lip Glazes from J.Lynne Cosmetics. I ordered Hilary and Julianne and they were promptly shipped out to me within a few days! Gotta love fast service.

The products arrived packaged neatly in a bit of black tissue paper and finished off with pink ribbon. Ain't it cute?!

The Gloss FX Natural Lip Glaze samples have a firm outer layer that needs to be cracked through with a little love and some warm fingers or a lip brush, if you choose. But once worked into, the consistency is definitely like that of a full-bodied lipgloss! HEART.

I like the non-sticky, subtle shimmer formula that the Gloss FX Natural Lip Glazes give off. It's not nearly as overdone as MAC's Dazzleglass, but delicately tasteful and with enough color to tint the lips when worn alone. The shine is also long-lasting which I know can be a concern for some ladies who are on the constant go with nil time for a lip touch-up.

I did find that the taste of the Gloss FX Lip Glaze to be slightly like the scent of lemon pledge. It could be that I'm just not one for snacks coming in the form of a lip product because another gal commented that "it smells amazing". Anything flavored on the lips isn't necessarily my forte, but not a challenge I'm not up for. Unless you're highly sensitive to the taste of product on your lips, you can easily get used to the essence. To me it's worth the tolerance curve for such a lovely product.

But the ultimate question is: How well does it do for dry lips?

Coming from dry city herself, these babies hold moisture in very well. Even over lipstick they ride well into the night. And with ingredients like Sweet Almond, Avocado, and Orange Peel Oil and Vitamin E, my lips were cocooned in a jacket of lip loving ingredients.

("Relax, I can." - my attempt at Yoda).

Along with my order were some samples of the Soft Silk Mineral Blush in Shy, Satin Pearl Mineral Eyeshadow in Caramel Latte, and the Ultra Intensity Mineral Eyeliner in Drama Queen.

(Photos are taken in natural lighting.)

Ultra Intensity Mineral Eyeliner & Satin Pearl Mineral Eyeshadow - Foiled

The camera didn't capture it at all but there is a nice touch of shimmer to each of these.

So, now that you've seen my mini J.Lynne Cosmetics loot, hang tight for the resulting FOTD when they're all pieced together!

Have you tried J.Lynne Cosmetics yet? If you have, what are your thoughts on this company?

Mrs. Lynne

Haul: NYX Fabulous Lashes

Let there be wings! And in one grocery visit, a young mother's dream was answered.

To you, I present
*drumroll* NYX Fabulous Lashes! Ok, so the drumroll wasn't necessary since the teaser picture was posted prior, but you catch the drift.

Aside from having a dyslexic hand at applying false eyelashes, I don't ever have time to put them on. But for some reason I had Heatherette's She's Good/She's Bad lashes on my mind and couldn't help but snag these for similar wannabes. Don't they just look so cute?!

I reckon I've only added another three items to an ever growing pile of the "too pretty to use" group but jumping jellyfish folks, my hands unconsciously grab things like this with no remorse! But could you blame me?

NYX, I love you!

Aloha,
Mrs. Lynne

MAC Product Releases: The Heatherette Swatches Journey & More Beauty Powder Haul Photos

If you've tried ordering Heatherette for MAC online, you'll be saddened by the fact that mostly everything in this collection is 'temporarily sold out' online. Within hours, black dots were placed next to many products.

Just how fast?

Once I got word of the Heatherette for MAC Collection being available online, yours truly headed right on over and started shopping, lining up everything that I wanted. 3 items, 4 items, 5 items,... ticked my shopping bag counter. Debating on if I should overnight the goods, I decided to ponder the thought while I made Big Tyke some breakfast. Given he's not the fastest eater but no more than an hours time had passed and alas! What was ready for check out in my shopping bag (and AVAILABLE BEFORE BREAKFAST!) was now accompanied beautifully with black dots. Oy!

So living in fear that I'd be fighting a stampede of luring Heatherette addicts at the store, I made sure to trot my butt (followed by two mini butts) bright and early to have first glance. Luckily they always put the new releases right at the edge of the counter because I park a double tandem stroller right there.

If you don't currently own any kiddos, trust me when I say they are ticking time bombs! So whenever I hit the counters for swatches, it's a race to the finish line. There's no time for chit chat, just swatch, swatch, swatch... Of course I can't be rude either so I chat a bit while grabbing products. By the time my arm is nearing it's final touches on a Picasso inspired masterpiece, I have Big Tyke screaming all of sudden because he dropped his McDonald's hashbrown on the floor (like my gimmick to buy me some time, lol). Luckily, my next step was paying so the final frontier was in sight. Although I beg to differ that it sure doesn't feel that way.

I think I was supposed to look at belts for Hubbo, but made a mad dash for the nearest exit. Lucky for me, MAC is located right in the middle of the mall by a sloooow elevator and a journey from the end-of-the-mall exits. *smirk* Someone beam me out of there already, lol! Of course the stroller movement has calmed the calamity down but it only completely subsides once we reach outside - my tykes are attracted to the outdoors. At least I can take pictures without interruptions :)

Overall the collection is nice, but for me, I just wasn't motivated to go crazy like I thought I would. Could it be a good thing to have your toddler and infant with you? I definitely think the Lipglasses are a great selection and do deserve some attention. All are wearable colors in my opinion although I think Style Minx is louder than your everyday Fuschia lip color, yet still gorgeous for that right look.

The Heatherette Lipsticks are more on the theatrical side, aside from Lollipop Loving which is sheer, and needs some toning down with gloss of some sort (unless the boldness IS your comfort zone) especially for my warmer skinned lovelies.

The Dual Edge Eye Pencils are really pretty and I think that those will find their way into some nice homes this week.

Heatherette's Eyeshadow Trio colors are alright but the packaging is to die for! Sturdy and cute! Fafi got nothing on this!

The Beauty Powders were a bit snoozy for me. I was actually thinking of picking up Smooth Harmony, but part of me thinks I can easily achieve a similar color with blush.

Of the pigments, Pink Pearl is very pretty! You can see the reflects of blue in it and it just pairs beautifully with the pink.

Reflects Gold is as expected and will probably sell out quickly seeing that the MAC Store here was sold out of them before the first release day was over when it came out with the Originals. The glitter particles in 3D Silver are much bigger than that of Reflects Gold. Reminds me of elementary school glitter by looks, but definitely not chunky like it.

Lola Devine needs another layer as I only had time for one, but the colors of both are true to the bottle. Please excuse the dry hands.

After making a huge list, I only came out with Trio 1 and both pigments (there WAS a reason I didn't make my online order!). I talked myself out of everything else from this collection since I don't use Beauty Powders (except blushes), will probably not have a need for colored pencils other than black or brown (although they were PRETTY), and I felt like I wanted to maximize my already growing NYX lipstick collection.

Welcome the first pigments to the MakeupFix Collection!

And because I didn't get as much as I thought I would from MAC's Heatherette, I compensated myself by getting the remaining Beauty Powder Blushes. What a snob, hah :P

Click here to view swatches of these.

So it's Thursday. Another week almost down and another fast weekend approaches (I need to talk to someone about extending weekends because this 2-day thing just ain't cutting it!). Are you dancing in your Heatherette goods yet?

Aloha,
Mrs. Lynne

MAC Swatch Comparison: Eversun Beauty Powder Blush VS. Sunbasque & Peachtwist Blush

I've had a SEVERE case of cabin fever this past week since the cold/flu seems to have struck our house again. I wish they would quit stopping by unannounced! It's very rude!

Deciding to cut our errands short yesterday due to Big Tyke's old man cough, Hubbo said something that shocked me because even though he's very understanding of "Me Time", he normally doesn't say things like this: "Hun, I'll take care of the boys so you can have some time to yourself. Go to the mall and do your swatches, or whatever it is that you do, and don't worry about a thing. I'll take care of them."

So Mommy got some time without the tykes to do as she pleased for a couple hours. And where did she go? To the mall of course! Did my due diligence and swatched MAC's Beauty Powder Blush Collection and even treated myself to a few of the products as well.

Aside from the Beauty Powder Blushes which are all very gorgeous, I picked up the MAC 169 which is featured with the MAC Beauty Powder Blush Collection. It is an angled face brush and is made of synthetic bristles whereas the 168 is made of goat hair according to the MA that was helping me. The bristles of the MAC 169 feel much softer than those of the MAC 168, which is why I opted for the 169 instead. I own the MAC 168SE from the Antiquitease Collection and don't use it because the bristles are harsh and turn the area I'm using it on red. The MAC Brush Sets are supposedly manufactured by machines versus the full-size brushes which are hand sculpted. I can attest to the quality BIG TIME!

Some readers are curious as to how Eversun compares to Sunbasque, a popular one of MAC's Sheertone Shimmer blushes. When comparing the two, Eversun appears more flat in color than Sunbasque does because it does not have the shimmered pearl sheen to the extent that Sunbasque has. Eversun looks to be in the same line of peach as Sunbasque is but with more bronzing properties and more coral to it's color. Sunbasque is definitely more peach toned with evident shimmer.

I threw Peachtwist in the mix also since it is very similar to Sunbasque in the sense of peaches. Peachtwist is a bit more on the golden rose side of things and can easily be considered a rosier or more of a coral peach. The base color of Peachtwist and Eversun seem to be close in color (not including the shimmer pearl sheen) but Peachtwist is much more coral overall. It is the shimmered pearl sheen in the Sheertone Shimmer blushes (Peachtwist and Sunbasque) that are definitely distinguishable from the Beauty Powder Blushes.

- WITH FLASH -

- WITHOUT FLASH -

In my opinion, Eversun is a nice peachy bronze to have on hand. If you like Sunbasque and want to have it in a beauty powder blush form, but without the shimmery pearl sheen and a tad rosy, I would suggest to try out Eversun. You never know until you swatch!

Mrs. Lynne
