Let's Discuss: What Are Your Top 5 Reasons On What Makes Makeup So Euphoric?

As I sat and lingered around the table after lunch today, I happily snacked on Bubbies Premium Mochi Ice Cream in Strawberry flavor. With each bite of this tasty dessert, I was thinking about how satisfying this amazing creation of flavored ice cream wrapped in sweetened rice flour was.

(Insert euphoric eye roll here)

If you take your thumb and middle finger making an "O" like one finger short of a "rock on" gesture, that is exactly the size of these to-die-for treats.

C'mon homies! I'm sure you've experienced this exact same euphoric sensation from some sort of dessert. And I ain't gonna lie, it has quite the price tag on it ($6.99 for an 8-pack - and that's this week's SALE price!) but it really is a savory treat that I'm willing to bite the bullet for once in a deserved while.

As I chomped away at another Strawberry flavored Mochi Ice Cream, I translated it into beauty terms and thought 'what is it about makeup that makes it such a euphoric experience?'. Proportionately, we've all bit the bullet at one time or another for our beauty products, but why? Why do we keep saving and dropping the dough for things that literally take nearly forever to use up?

With sugar fueling the brain, I jotted down my Top 5 Reasons On What Makes Makeup So Euphoric:
  1. The colors - I'm fascinated by the wide spectrum of colors whether its a the entire set of MAC eyeshadows or an unopened 5-pack of bright colored printing paper. Go ahead and call me crazy for the latter. Ain't no shame in my obsession for colors.
  2. Creative color combination possibilities - Having four different colored eyeshadows doesn't mean only one look using all four or four solid eyelid colors. It means use your imagination and get creative!
  3. Buying it! - I don't know why, but I just get excited to be rung up. Not about the total, but I think it has something to do with the symbolic fact that once I pay, that means the products are MINE MINE MINE!
  4. Opening and play with it! - It's like opening the door to your brand new car and driving it for the first time - there's excitement!
  5. Obsession can be a profession - If you enjoy anything enough, there's always a way to put it to work for you.
What are your Top 5 Reasons On What Makes Makeup So Euphoric? What makes you keep handing over the dolla' bills fo su' mo?

Mrs. Lynne

I feel like I'm back in school! :P

I think you described all the 5 reasons why I like makeup. The number one reason in my book is that I can completely transform myself just by adding a little foundation, eyeliner and lipstick!

yummy411 said...

great question!
here are my honest answers...

1. it USED TO BE a moderate indulgence for me.. now it's starting to break the bank =(

2. makeup doesn't have a size. =(( with my never ending fitness battle, makeup doesn't change in size.

3. a hobby that can be a profession.

4.artistic expression that i can display on myself!

5. transformation capabilities!

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with your reasons! In addition, I have found that I seem to have an addiction to new things! After a while I get bored of the same things (read "anything I actually already own") and new makeup colors or finishes feed the need for new! At least it's cheaper than re-doing the living room! ;)

There's also completeness. Sometimes I'm doing a look and I think "I need such-and-such a color to really finish this look!" When I finally find and acquire that color... bliss!

Don't forget the thrill of the hunt! Searching and searching until the exact shade and degree of shimmer come together in one product which exactly matches my vision! Yoink!

Finally, and epecially with brands like MAC, there's the limited edition fervor, fueled by fellow fans who can really bring the anticipation to a fever pitch!

So you can bet that indeed, those dolla' bills will keep flowing from me! :)

Hey girl! Just letting you know that I tagged you to post your camera type(s) you use for your FOTDs/EOTDs. Thanks! Looking forward to reading it!

Ice cream mochi?!?! Hot damn, that's brilliant! I made some plain old mochi yesterday (and summarily ate the whole batch), but ice cream mochi is phenomenal! I wish we had THAT on the mainland. :*(

Christiana Divine @ Memoirs of A Shopping Addict said...

Interesting topic sis! :) I think you've pretty much named all of the reasons I like make-up too. Especially #1, that would be my number 1 reason as well. :P

Anonymous said...

Hi MandyPandy!

Just had to chime in... are you on U.S. mainland? I'm in California and we have ice cream mochi aplenty! At least 3 different brands, and even Trader Joe's carries it! I hope you can find some near you!

I like green tea best! :)

Gloss Lizard:

Yes I am on the US mainland. That sounds wonderful, by the way! We don't have Trader Joes in our area, but I'll check me local Wholefoods and Wegmans next time I go there!

Dit moi: Do these Bubbies come with the bamboo fork in the picture? I'm guessing the fork in the picture is just a prop, like the leaf and the beads. Ah, well.

Omggg I LOVE Bubbies!!!!! My bf & I always get the multiple orgasm icecream cake. yummm

Jenn said...

Hey girl, your top 5 reasons are mine too, plus, them pretties make such beautiful collectibles! lol!! i love laying them out all over my desk and ogle (God bless the boyfriend's soul for not thinking that i'm crazy! hahaha!!)! :P:P

I’m currently using the Lancome Neurowhite cleanser. I usually wipe of my makeup with either the Loreal gentle waterproof makeup remover or the MAC Cleanse off oil, then follow with the Lancome cleanser :) I can’t wait to try out the oil cleansing method you posted about sometime ago! I’m still looking for the castor oil!!

I never thought of keeping my chopped off hair (more used to seeing it all over the salon floor! :D)! I don’t think I’ll do that though… it kinds of creeps me out! Lol!! Did you keep your hair when you chopped it off?

No I don’t own any viva glams, but I’d love to! There is only ONE pathetic lipstick and gloss available here currently, and it’s not my coloring (not such which one it is!) :( I remember buying the IV gloss for a friend, and until today I’m still kicking myself for not getting it for myself!! It’s soo pretty!! talking about lippies, I went and checked out the slimshines, and guess what? The Long Stem Rose that I wanted was out of stock yet again!!! I’m heartbroken! Lol!

It’s Friday (here anyway! Lol!)! whats grooving your weekend? :D

*drools* I LOOOOOOOVE MOCHI ICE CREAM!!!! I've never heard or seen Bubbies. Dang I want some mochi ice cream!

I love it because you can play and experiment with it!

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Hey Emilee,

Oh the joy of makeup, right? Hah. Do you wear makeup on a regular basis? Or at least what you described: foundation, eyeliner, and lipstick?

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

That is a great list yummy411!! I especially like your #1. I feel that now that I've "indulged" myself, that there is no turning back (read: break the bank :/) Hah.

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Those are good glosslizard! I have a short attention span on the makeup I already own too. And ain't that hilarious because I know I have more than enough colors to mix and match for a lifetime!

And I have a sense of total completeness too! Like when I'm done completing a look, I think "see? I knew I'd need that shade for something!" Justification in action :P

And the whole cult encouragement for those LE's, you'd really think we were just crazy standing in a line wrapped around the mall AFTER it's closed for some damn Fafi! I don't know whether or not to be embarrassed or proud, lol. Yet, Mister Debit Card still gets handed on over without remorse.

Being that you are very meticulous about finding the exact color with the exact finish, what is(are) your favorite eyeshadow color(s)?

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Thanks for the tag mrslanielovemac! I've been meaning to do a post on that - yay! *crosses post ideas off the list* :)

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Hiya MandyPandy.

Speaking of mochi ice cream, I just dusted the very last strawberry one only minutes ago! Lol.

Mochi is a very big product here on the islands and one of those family oriented endeavors in which they invite everyone to come and help "pound" the mochi. I could imagine that you can try checking out an asian grocer in your area to see if they carry it. You can also order it online at BubbiesIceCream.com.

But I do hope that you get to try some. It's to die for! :)

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Chris, I just fascinated by colors in anything! You know those gel pens? Yup. I have EVERY single color, lol!

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Oooh, I haven't tried Green Tea yet Glosslizard but I'm slowly starting to crave the taste of green tea in general! They also have a Lychee one here and on the site they have a Pistachio one! Agh!! I must find a grocer that sells the Pistachio one... *drool*

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

That would have been sooo cool if it came with the bamboo fork MandyPandy! Sadly, my box only had a piece of parchment paper to keep the lovelies from sudden freezer exposure :/

What flavor of mochi did you make the other day?

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Omg christy!! Ice cream cake is the best. If you're ever on the Leeward side, you should check out Hapa Grill's fried ice cream. It's like a fist full of crispy goodness and vanilla bean ice cream on the inside....

Ok, this has totally evolved to making me hungry! LOL.

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Hey crazychick,

Collectibles is exactly right, hun! And I think we're very lucky that our sigs haven't completely cut us off from makeup shopping, lol.

How is the Cleanse Off Oil working for you? I bet it smells great! Doesn't MAC just have this certain fragrance to it? I swear my mascara even smells of MAC!

I did not keep my hair when I chopped it off. Since my hair is not straight, there was no sense in keeping brittle split ends ;) But we did keep my son's hair when we first cut it.

Long Stem Rose is sooo pretty. I like Intimidate also. I really have been reaching for my Slimshine lately. And it's nice knowing that my lips will stay moisturized throughout its wear, even if for a millisecond, hah.

As for my weekend, I just got sick so looks like I'll have to nurse myself back to working order :( I woke up this morning with a fever and tried to catch Z's between the baby naps and the tube babysitting my eldest, lol. It really did suck because my body was VERY VERY sore today and even the slightest touch made me hurt. I hope it clears up soon!

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Hey Krystle,

Did you try that other brand of mochi ice cream? I've only tried Bubbies because my sister-in-law got some and very soon after I got addicted. What else are you favorite island desserts?

Winnie said...

I totally agree with all your reasons. I love buying wierd and wonderful colours and seeing all the little boxes stacked up on the counter, bring them home and tipping the contents onto my bed. Oh the hours of fun :D

Vanessa said...

Thanks SIS! I have missed you! Hmm I love makeup just because it allows me to be creative! :)

Any plans for the weekend?

Anonymous said...

Hi Mrs. Lynne!

I'm so sorry you're sick! :( Hope you feel better soon!

I think my favorite eyeshadow(s) would have to be my beloved Winter Nights quad by Chanel! It's a cool neutral palette (colors somewhat similar to Fafi eyes 1) with the most beautiful subtle pearl sheen. Elegant yet noticeable, and easy to dress up or down for day or night! It's LE so far, so I will be very sad when I run out!

Some other (current) favorites are Shiseido's Hydro-Powder eyeshadow in Lemon Sugar, MAC paint pots in Perky, Girl Friendly and Nice Vice (can't choose!) and the NARS duo in Habanera and single in Abyssinia! All of these have great color payoff (except the Shiseido which is a little more sheer) and enough sparkle or shimmer to make them interesting without being over-the-top!

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Hey diamondcanopy,

Aren't us makeup gurus just a crazy bunch? It's so nice knowing that these things we do for makeup are understandable amongst other fellow makeup gurus ;) Unlike Hubbo who thinks I'm just purely crazy, lol!

Do you have any plans for the weekend yet?

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Me too Sis Nessa!

As for this weekend, I'd like to recover from a sore body ache but being that I have to work, I'll have to suck up the pain, hah.

How about hun? Any plans?

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Thanks Glosslizard. I could definitely tell a difference when I woke up this morning. I feel much better. I have a runny nose but no more achy body.

Those eyeshadows all sound great! I think I did check out that Habanera duo before and it was really pretty. I think there was another duo with it at the time, but I remember both duos being amazing colors! I have yet to indulge in some NARS but I know they payoff of that brand is fantastic.

The formula of the Shiseido Hydro-Powder sounds quite interesting. Is it like a cream to powder finish type of eyeshadow?

Anonymous said...

Oh good! Life is better when you're not achy (stating-the-obvious alert)! ;)

I think Sugarland was the other one, I liked it but didn't get it. I've actually been thinking of getting it now, since I'm more amenable to neutrals now! Actually, the two NARS shades I listed are the only NARS shawos I own! I've heard that the "Clubbing" line of sparkly darks make for awesome smokey eyes!

Yeah, the Shiseido is creamy and a little bit souffle-like (not too fluffy) and it dries to a pretty long-lived finish. Lemon Sugar is from the spring line and it's sheerer than previous ones, with a pretty sparkly payoff! I dust over it with Stila's Prize shadow when I want more vibrant color. Usually I do a blended eye with gold, so the creamy texture is perfect for me!

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

I would love to get my hands on some NARS. What do you think about their blushes? I know that the Orgasm duo is very popular since EVERYONE uses it.

I just love the name "Lemon Sugar". Probably because I LOVE both, lol. I can already taste it in my mouth! Does it go on similar to a paint pot as in thin enough to not crease? Or do you combat that problem with your own crease-free solution (i.e. UDPP, Two Face,...)

Krystle said...

Icee float from Zippy's (the one King St. by Punahou)

Shave ice with ice cream from Matsumotos. mmmmm

and my mom's banana lumpia. LOL

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Hey Krystle,

Have you ever tried SlushPuppies? I'm curious if they're like Icee's but have never tried yet. Oooh, and speaking of Zippy's, guess what we had for dinner last night?! A bucket of Zippy's chicken and 2lbs. of chili, lol! Well, we didn't eat it all, but you leftovers are tasting mighty good...

I love Matsumotos! What is your favorite there? Have you tried it with condense milk?

And I love banana lumpia, or toron I guess is what it's called. I haven't made that in a long time. I prefer to just snag a handful at family get togethers ;)

Anonymous said...

Well, I made plain old mochi the other day, but not even from scratch, sadly; I used tinned red-bean paste and Mochiko sweet rice flour. It wasn't bad, but I'd like to start experimenting with other flavors; I find that red bean paste goes well with (don't laugh) cream cheese or Neufchatel.

It's good to hear that mochi is readily available on the islands; over here the only places you see it are Asian grocers and Wegmans. Is iced kachang also popular in Hawaii? Something tells me it would be.

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Hi MandyPandy,

That is very interesting that the red bean paste goes well with cream cheese and Neufchatel! I'm a fan of red bean and cream cheese, but would have never thought to pair them together. Then again, I make these crab wontons in which I mix the crab with cream cheese and they taste delicioso!

So I had to google Iced Kachang because I never heard of it. And it almost looks like shaved ice from the pictures. I've never tried it but I'm almost thinking that the place to find that here would be in Chinatown. I'll have to check out places now when we eat because the name itself doesn't ring a bell.

We have shaved ice shops all over the place, and some have the option to add red bean at the bottom or topped off with condensed milk (yum!), but nothing to the tops like Iced Kachang. But now I'm going to be on the lookout for that because it looks amazing and I bet it tastes great!

What part of the states are you located? The reason I ask is because I don't know of Wegmans.

Mukho said...

Eww! I'd just typed a looong comment, and then IE lost it!

Anyway, Hi Mrs Lynne! hope u and the little ones are doing just fine now :) my week went by just like that, and as for the haul hangover, i'm now on curfew enforced by hubby, who drags me away from all the stores. He says, I'm married to a loony, cant help that, but danged if i'm gonna let her near any make-up shop..

But the euphoria continues.. a haul is really good for ur health... and the reasons are:
1)The colors! I could stare at any palette, all day long! :)

2)A tad of eyeliner, a smudge of lipstick, and Amita the grump turns into Amita the head-turner! :)

3)Shimmer, glitter, shine... I must be part magpie! ;)

4) I love learning new stuff from all the warm-hearted teachers on the net - rock those fotds, girlz! :D

5)Make-up reminds me of Mom - I remember from very early childhood how she used to be so perfectly put together - she still is... it's tough to get married and move to a far off state. Sigh... nostalgia...

Anonymous said...

I like their blushes (I use Orgasm too)! They're finely milled and have good color payoff without being TOO pigmented (therefore streaky). I can't really attest to the lasting power vs. other kinds of blushes, but they seem fine to me!

I like the name Lemon Sugar too, sounds tasty! :) It does go on pretty crease-free. It's a little thinner than paint pot consistency, so it spreads well, but the fluffiness gives it a stiffness in working with it that makes it easier to apply! I use it alone or over a primer depending on what else I'm doing with the look!

B said...

You hit allll of the reasons why I like to purchase make-up. The colors is just....it's like heaven.

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Awww.. I'm sorry Mukho. I really don't like when that happens either. I always forget to copy my comments and end up getting sour when it loses the words I put so much thought into :/ Darn Internet! Hah.

Your Hubby sounds like my Hubbo also. He knows just how to negotiate with me... in MAC giftcards or by saying he'll let me spend $X.XX, lol! One time, I went to the mall while he was working and he said I couldn't go anywhere near the MAC store. So I challenged myself and didn't go it. But he DIDN'T say I couldn't go in Sephora or the MAC counter at Macys ;) LOLLOLOL.

Those are some good reasons! I especially love your #2!! You had my cracking up. I love the transformation aspect of it too.

So have you been able to come up with some more snazzy looks with your makeup loot? And do you have a favorite color you absolutely just LOVE to use?

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

I'm not sure if you've tried them, but I just LOVE the MAC Beauty Powder Blushes. Of course, you are more meticulous than I am but to me they seem to give off a rather genuine color payoff and are finely milled as well. Only a couple taps with the brush (and I mean LIGHT taps) and you have more than enough product!

Ok, you've definitely got my curious about Lemon Sugar! I like fluffiness and everything you've described about it. It just sounds intriguing! MUST SEEEEE.

I want to play with it like freaking playdough, lol. I'm quite the kid like that. I love textures. HEY! Maybe that's why Big Tykes touches things ALL the time. He gets it from me! I am driving myself crazy with my own nasty habit, lol.

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

You know Divine Blackness. I bet me and you can sit on those black MAC chairs in front of the eyeshadow display and just have a Disneyland blast! Create color combos, swatch up our arms, dig our finger tips into the pots (cuz they ain't ours, lol!),.... fuuuun.

Anonymous said...

I've been wanting to play with the Beauty Powder blushes, I just have enough blushes right now, so I have to wait until the need arises! Shouldn't be too long now... LOL!

Yeah, check it out, it's a good product!

Touchy exploration good! Maybe you can hook Big Tyke up with some finger paints or something! I finally learned that I can tolerate the messes if I set up the art projects outside! ;)

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

I really love the beauty powders Glosslizard. I'm so glad I bought them all, lol!

I saw an image of the Lemon Sugar on Beauty Talk's blog and it is really gorgeous! What I'd love to do is swirl the stuff between my thumb and index finger... I'm so curious.

Finger paints is a great idea! We just bought him a tyke basketball hoop over the weekend because the cheapo $3 finally died on us. But he's enjoying it. I'm going to check out the paints though and see if we can hook him up to an easel of some sort.

How was your second dinner celebration?

Anonymous said...

Ok, you've talked me into it! I'm going to check out the beauty powders on Friday! ;)

Oh do! Shiseido is so easy to find, you can go and play!

My birthday was so fun! I wore some seriously over-the-top fake eyelashes (criss-crossed, winging out on the ends with a glitter strip along the lash line)! I glammed up the makeup and wore a ridiculously tight black dress! I ate delicious food, raked in the compliments, danced until my feet hurt and had an amazing time! I'm still basking in the post-birthday afterglow! Aaaaah!

Hope you managed to have a little fun this weekend too! :)

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Dang McMilfy! It sounds like you looked absolutely smashing and had one hell of a birthday!! I'm already feeling your seductiveness just from the description. But really hun, I'm sooo glad you were able to enjoy your celebration.... and look hot doing it ;)

And on your fabulous suggestion, I just picked up some paints at Wal-Mart for Big Tyke. I can already see him saying "paint" continuously after. You know when they get all excited when they try something new that they like and they want to do it ALL the time? It was like that for a while with "wash". I'd give him some of his old sippy cups to "wash" and let him stand next to me at the sink while I washed dishes, hah.

Hope you're having a great week so far and that your feet have recovered from such a fab weekend!

Anonymous said...

It was fun fo' sho'! I do love a chance to do a totally uber-glam makeup look! It's so rare I get to do that and not feel like I'm completely out of place!

Oh, I hope he has fun! That sounds so darn cute!!!

My week is great, and my feet are fine! It's allll about the Aerosoles, my friend! ;)

Hope you're fully recovered and enjoying a fabulous week yourself!

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

I totally know what you mean mama! Any excuse to get dolled up and show it off works for me, heh.

And it feels good to be back in shape again. Ugh.. I went to the mall yesterday to check out the Dazzleglasses and I was told myself to stop by Shiseido to check out Lemon Sugar and I completely forgot. Oh why does absent-mindedness have perfect timing??? Next time... again, lol.

Y'all have any plans this weekend?
