Save your money and a phone call to MacPro for the Water-based Mixing Medium. I mean, why spend that much money if you can buy Glycerin and make it yourself, right?
Mixing Medium can be used in a variety of ways. It can be used to thin out liquid foundation that is too heavy in viscosity, foil eyeshadows in pigment form such as my recent Base Trials using it on it's own or over Urban Decay Primer Potion, or with powdered makeup to create anything from sheer to opaque effects. MACPro also suggests that you can use it to adhere "MAC glitter to the skin". The great thing is you can be as creative as you want with it.
Mixing Medium is simply made from two ingredients: Glycerin and good 'ol H2O. Glycerin, found in numerous cosmetics products, is a humectant which means that it will retain moisture and water content in the skin. It can be found at regular drugstores like Wal-Mart and Target. I bought my Glycerin at Wal-Mart, and if I can remember correctly, in the aisle where the First Aid materials are. If in doubt, just ask an associate and they should be able to point you in the right direction.
Word to the wise: Make this in SMALL batches.
Because you are simply just mixing Glycerin and water together, the resulting by-product is not made to last long because you are omitting the preservatives which keep any product long-lasting. I would say to keep any given batch for no longer than two weeks, so make accordingly. I left mine in the plastic container just to see what would happen and it molded after a while. You definitely don't want to mess with your eyes in that manner so please, err on the safe side.
What You'll Need:
- Glycerin
- Water
- Container to keep it in (closed top container or spritz bottle)
- Measuring spoons
The Recipe:
3 Parts Water
1 Part Glycerin

- Measuring spoons
The Recipe:
3 Parts Water
1 Part Glycerin
Step 1: Gather your materials.
Step 2: Pour the Glycerin into the measuring unit of your choice. I used a 1/2 tablespoon which is A LOT. Unless you plan on using A LOT of Mixing Medium within 2 weeks, I would suggest using either 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon.
Step 3: Pour the Glycerin into the container.
Step 4: Now add the water. It doesn't matter if it's distilled, purified, or straight tap. Whatever you are most comfortable with. I'm using purified water. Remember, the recipe is 1 part Glycerin, 3 parts water, so repeat this step 3 times.
You've combined the ingredients. See the Glycerin?
Step 5: Mix the ingredients. I just capped the container...
...and swirled it around to mix it.
Now to use it.
Either pour some of the Mixing Medium into another clean container (or the lid) or dip a clean brush into the Mixing Medium. If at anytime there is too much product on the brush, simply dab it on a clean tissue.
To convert black eyeshadow to eyeliner, use your brush that contains Mixing Medium on it and scrape the edges of the pan. Avoid going for the middle in case the Mixing Medium doesn't work well with the eyeshadow so as not to ruin the entire pot/pan. Some will look filmy after in the area where scraped. MAC Sketch is one that will look filmy so be sure to keep your brush along the edge.
Voila... black liner.
And based on using 1/2 tablespoon, you only used this much. So a bottle of Glycerin will definitely last you awhile especially if you use a smaller measuring unit!
You can also opt to pour the mixture into a spritz bottle like this and just spray your brush as needed.
So go at it folks! Enjoy your same makeup, under a new light :)

Mrs. Lynne

YAY! Thanks for this great post :]
Just a noobie question...it's 3 parts water and 1 part glycerine...so if I use 1/4teaspoon of glycerine, I need to use 1/4teaspoon TIMES 3 of water?
LOL, thanks :D
woo hoo! thanks for this great tut. ahh yes... another thing to pick up at the drugstore. LOL! :P :] this is honestly really helpful and detailed so thanks for that. you know, you're a really great writer. everything you blog about from your reviews to your tuts is always so detailed and setup so professionally. love it. i really do enjoy reading your posts. :D
I made this long time ago from Pursebuzz and I must say I love it, totally great alternative to MAC's...I did a tutorial on it as well and its funny how so many people don't know about this!
Julie Hey girl! You got it correct :) Whatever measuring unit you choose, in this case 1/4 tsp., then you will use one 1/4 tsp. for Glycerin, and fill 1/4 tsp. with water 3 times. Then once you get that down, on your next batch you can make more or less depending on how much you use of the mixing medium within two weeks.
Do let me know how it goes for you, ok?
Chris I am just sending you to the drugstore left and right, aren't I! Lol.
You are the sweetest girl to me Chris! I really appreciate your wonderful comments and it always brightens my day to read what you have to say. If only all my English teachers could read what you have to say because I never got A's in English, lol. Writing was actually my weakness in school, hah.
Thanks again sis for the heartwarming comment. I truly means a lot!
Nessa That's where I learned about it also! Way back when, hah.
thanks for this :)
where can you purchase glycerin at? do you think longs or walmart carries that stuff?
Madisyn wished you would have posted a pic of the mold! Yeah we don't read books around here just beauty blogs LOL! Just kidding!
I have the exact bottle of glycerin too! Good stuff!
It was 70 degrees here yesterday, but I stayed in the house and played in makeup! HA!
great tut! very very clear...i've messed up a couple of shadows b/c of using wet brushes...and then they have this dark looking layer on top that prevents the shadow from going on your brush...how do you get them to be like new? i just scrape off the top layer...
Hey!
I just did a little post on this as well, using the mixing medium with pigments to bring out the vibrancy of the colours.
I love this technique! So easy and much cheaper than buying it from MAC or wherever...
wow, i need to try this. I have a lot of the NYX loose pearl shadows and i've been trying to figure out a way to get them to stick to my eyelids...
but anyways, thx for stopping by my blog, and if you should ever need advice about certain things on your kids, let me know.. it's something i have come to learn to be an expert on. LOL! j/k, always a learning process... right?
Thank you for this tutorial. I was about to go buy me a mixing medium from the mac store (2 hours from where I live). Now I can make my own and save money!! Yay!! Thanks again!
Fantastic Mrs Lynne! It's like science class only wayyy better - they should have taught us this kind of stuff in school, I would have gotten better grades ;)
i tried this a few weeks ago and it really does work for lining. but ...for some reason i thought pursebuzz's recipe was the other way around (3 parts glycerin to 1 part water)...lol. maybe thats why i felt like it wouldn't dry at all when i was foiling pigments with it haha.
great tutorial btw :) glad to know too that UDPP helps solve the creasing problem, thanks for doing that post !
hello there,
I;m new to your site found it of of Vanessa's page. and i must say your page is very informative i remember something like this from enkore on youtube. oh and your last post very pretty color combos and your eyes are very pretty!!
Lisa Hey mommy. You're welcome. I got my Glycerin at Wal-Mart, but you can probably find it at Longs also.
How's are things? Still coming over?
Shawnta Lol. I love you girl. You are just too comical for your own good, I tell ya'!!!
Aww. Tell Madisyn that next time when I make it, I'll leave a little bottle out just for her to spoil :)
I would take any day to stay at home and play with makeup. Give me an hour to myself and I am all locked up in the bathroom, lol.
Btw, what foundation have you been sticking with lately?
Ren Hi sis. My Sketch is like that. Thank goodness I only put the brush on the outer edge. I have no idea how to get them like new. I think that area of the shadow is just damaged unless, like you do, scrape off the layer that's diseased. It's very similar to putting your fingers into eyeshadow. I don't ever do this because the oil in the fingers creates the same effect. And I have to literally keep scraping at the pan with the brush just to get some color.
Does a lot of the eyeshadow get effected, or only some?
Kristy Q Hello there :)
It sure is! You can even use this as a makeup setting spray if you wanted to also. I love it's versatility and you can get so much more, quantity-wise, out of making it.
How is your day going so far? Any plans for the weekend?
missjaclynrose I have those too! I used them a long time ago and haven't touched them since. I still need to buy new containers because the mouth of those jars are damn near impossible to fit any brush in.
Thank you dear for extending your wisdom to me. I really enjoy chatting with other mothers because motherhood truly is a world of it's own and it really does take one who is going through (or has been through) it, to understand and empathize. Plus, it'll help keep the sanity in check, lol.
Do you and Mr. Man plan on having anymore children?
mrslanielovesmac You bet girl!! You know we need the extra change for diapers and stuff, lol.
Do you and the fam have any plans going on this weekend?
Nilla Cookie Meeee too!! Like I totally would have paid attention if someone where teaching me the crafts of blending. I so would have been willing to take the AP course in that, lol.
So did you decide what to get with your new earnings?
blu3 Hey girl. You should definitely file that under your bloopers, hah. I actually thought the same thing when I was about ready to pour the second Glycerin in and though, "isn't that going to be tooo thick?" Then realized it was water instead, hah.
And you're welcome :)
Do you have some plans stashed for the weekend?
Xuanie Hi Xuanie! It's nice to meet you and I'm glad to hear you're finding the site resourceful :)
I did see EnKore's video on this and that was actually around the time I found out about this. It's amazing how easy it is and how the results are tremendously outrageous!
Thank you for the compliment as well :)
Do you have a particular cosmetics line that you tend to favor?
Well, I just picked up a couple of items for Lancome so I'm going to wait a little bit before I splurge on more. Must try to refrain at least a little, right?
Nilla Cookie Good for you girl! I like your determination at self-refraining. You should write a book on that because I definitely need myself a copy. Well, actually I think I did pretty good considering I only picked up one Slimshine today, lol.
But you know. I just KNEW you were getting your hot mitts on some Lancome, lol. I hear a FOTD is in order to show off the newest stash members ;)
what a great tutorial!!! I'll be trying this out once my magic eye changer finish up! Have to go on a hunt for glycerin now!
Elizabeth Thanks hun! This will seriously last you until your next lifetime. Once you get it, you have to let me know how much they charge for it over there. And one of these days, I'm gonna have you get me one of your primers to try out. I love the name!
Something in this mix (I'm guessing the glycerin lol) reacts badly on my skin. :( I tried it on, and it burned! I think it's one of those weird things that only I react to. Great. :\
Emilee Aww, that's not good girl. You must really have sensitive skin. You can probably just foil with water then. But, boo :(
hi. =)
I came across your page and found the mixing medium tutorial really helpful. I have a quick question though, I have a bottle of glycerin that is mixed with rose water. When I read the ingredients, it says that there is 10% glycerin - would the 3:1 ratio (of glycerin to water) still hold or should it be 2:1 or 1:1. Please advise!! =T thank you so much
Anonymous Hi there! That is a very good question. First off, the ratio of 3:1 is water to glycerin, not the other way around :) That would definitely be too much glycerin and would not work how you want it to, lol.
Ok, love. Here are my math skills at work, hah. Being that what you currently have is 10% glycerin, that would mean the ratio is 4:1 (rosewater to glycerin). Technically for the formula on the homemade, glycerin would be 25% of the mixture. So since yours already contains 10%, you would need to add more glycerin. Adding more water would only dilute the mixture even further. I think the math part of it will get rather difficult from this point because you'll have to factor in how much you will be using. Like will you be adding glycerin to the entire container? Or just part of it? And at what measuring unit? You know? And if you're aiming for exactly 25%, I hope you have your conversions and calculator ready, heh.
Honestly sweetie. I would just use what you have now and see how it works for you. When I used MAC FIX+, it still did well as a mixing medium and all I knew was that it contained glycerin. I had no idea how much. But like I said, just try it out and see how it works for you. If you really still want to try the homemade after, then you can always pick up glycerin at the store for a couple of bucks. Plus, you'd have to pick it up anyways if you were to add it to the mixture you already own.
Sorry I couldn't give you an exact answer. I hope my math didn't confuse you :) Hah. Please let me know if it did and I'll try to decipher more of it. Have a great weekend!!
Oh, and thank you kindly for taking the time to stop by my blog. I do hope to see you around more often :)
Wow, I've been gone for a while!
Quel surprise! I actually made the mixing medium myself a couple of weeks ago; I needed a cheaper and less irritating alternative to Fix+, and had glycerin and (unused, ofcourse) bottled water lying around. I found spritzer bottles in the $1 section at Tarjay, brought some home and got to work. After a little bit of finagling, I discovered that you achieve the ideal mixing medium viscosity between 1/4 and 1/3 glycerin; any more glycerin and you end up with sticky, fake sweat.
I filled my other bottles with water (cheaper than Evian spray), rubbing alcohol (a quick and easy sanitizer) and Camellia oil respectively. The spritzer bottles work great for distributing oil and I can imagine using them to dispense other lower viscosity oils (either for cooking or for the OCM).
MandyPandy You HAVE been gone girl! Hah. Welcome back though :)
My ratio is 3:1 (water to Glycerin) and it works well for me. Don't you just LOVE spritzer bottles?!?! I like those and the dropper ones.
I actually haven't tried my OCM in a spritzer. I just keep it in a pop-top container. But that doesn't sound like a bad idea. I just might do a little transfer ;)
Hope you're having a great week hun!
I saw a video tutorial on this by Enkore a while back...here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbKmWd_FlpI and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5JhQ9HSu-8 . I love how my pigments just adhere to it on my eyes..they really do pop.
Hi sis, how u been, sorry I know this is an old thread...
I'm just wondering where did you buy your measuring spoons? it's soooo cute and i think it's time for me to have a one (I'm mixing stuffs for my skin care) hehe
Thanx in advance!
Hi Gracesta!
EnKore is some guy, huh!! He always has some helpful tips.
I'm glad to hear that the mixing medium is working out for you. They really do add that extra sass to any look.
Are there certain pigments you find yourself foiling quite often?
Hi Nanzy.
I'm doing great sis, thanks for asking :) And don't ever worry about hashing up old threads, my dear. It may be a chronological blog, but the information is still the same.
I actually just picked up those measuring spoons at Wal-Mart. You can pick them up in the aisle that has the baking pans and everything. The entire set is rainbow colored so each increment is a different color. They also have matching measuring cups also! Hah.
So have you gotten around to trying your Pure Luxe stuff yet?
Yay I'm gonna check out Walmart then :) how much did it cost you? hehehe sry if i ask too much question.
Oh my PureLuxe OCM sample is almost done, but now I'm purging from all the natural stuffs (been using Garden of Wisdom products for a week while started to reduce my Benzoyl Peroxide amount) so it's starting to effect my skin, hopefully they'll clear up soon!
Yesss I've turned into all natural in terms of skin care now :) heheh
Hey Nanzy,
They really don't cost that much. I don't remember since it's been so long but I'm sure it's around $5 or so. But they are much cheaper than the other fancy ones like stainless steel.
Congrats on your skin care girl! I think your skin is just freaking out a bit but it should resolve soon. What from GoW are you using? I have a long shopping list of things I want to get from them.
ok thanx : ) coz I saw a one in Ebay:
http://i15.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/ef/16/8660_1.JPG
cost $5.50, was thinking of buying that one but if it's the same price, I'll hit Walmart tomorrow hehe
I've tried many, Takrai Lemongrass, Immortelle HA, Chardonnay Grapeseed Oil, Pineapple Mist, Rosacea Serum..the one that I have yet to try: GoW OCM, Melissa Lemonbalm Hydrosol, Chamomile German Hydrosol, Manuka Honey, and Oats&Honey Cleanse.
What are you planning to get?
Those ones are cute Nanzy! I like how the actual spoon is colored and the handles are longer. But I would check Wal-Mart first. If you like them, then you can get them, if not, then order them eBay style :)
I am sooo lemming the Takrai Lemongrass! I also want to try: Fruit Acid Exfo Pads, Moisturizing Gel, and the Perfekt Pumpken Mask. There are others but I think their site has changed since the last time I visited. Oohh.. and some Emu Oil. Yeyah! Hah. Have you tried any of those other than the Lemongrass?
I wanted to try the Moisturizing Gel and Perfekt Pumpken Mask but since I have Rosacea Serum atm whose ingredients is more or less the same as moisturizing gel, I gave it a pass this time.
I'm an oily-acne prone type so I wanna just concentrate on getting my skin back to normal now.
Yeah theres so many new products now, I want them all too LOL but I'm trying to save money by making my own Red Wine Vinegar Toner and soon I'll try making Glacial Clay mask hehe horray!
Will def check out walmart tomorrow : ) yes those spoons are too kyoooot!
What are you mixing with the Red Wine Vinegar? I've been meaning to make myself a toner for sometime but wanted to mix it with Aloe Juice which I cannot find (haven't made it to Down To Earth yet). Oh.. which reminds me, that is another thing I was going to order from GoW.
Glacial Clay mask sounds fun too. What are you using for that? I have this setting powder from Buff'd and it's so lovely. It has the Kaolin Clay in it and makes my skin so soft when I use it and the matting abilities are super!
For RWV Toner:
I use Mineral Spring Water & Red Wine Vinegar (I got the Napa Valley Organics Brand), you should start off by making the small batch of 1/8 tsp vinegar to 1/2 oz liquid. You can use Hydrosol/Distilled Water/Spring Water/AVJ (although Jen suggested Spring water more than distilled)
For Clay Mask:
I got the glacial clay for my skin type but I heard Rhassoul or Rose clay is also awesome.
I dunno abt the measurement, but some girls add 1/2 Tbs of Clay powder to the liquid until it makes a thin paste.
Options for liquid: Hydrosol, Water, Milk, Yogurt, or Honey. Yogurt is supposedly great since it contains Lactic Acid.
btw where is Down To Earth located? I went to Huckleberry Farm in Nuuanu Ave. : D
Oh I haven't tried Buff'd setting powder..maybe I should, I'm loving Joppa finishing powder too !
Thanks for the info Nanzy!
Jen was the one who suggested Aloe Juice with RWV but since I can't find that (except online) I'll go for Spring water in the meantime. And thanks for the measurements. She just told me 1:30, but I'm only supposed to make a week's worth, lol.
I'm so excited about clay masks! I'm using the one by St. Ives right now but of course would like to migrate naturally. Is it just plain yogurt that you'd use? I like the sound of Lactic Acid - yeee!!
Have you tried making a Green Tea Mask?
There's a Down To Earth right next to Circuit City by Pearlridge. I believe there's one in your area too but I'm not too sure where. Does the Huckleberry Farm have a pretty big selection of things? I think I'll go there one day when I'm in town.
Thanks again hun!
Oh, I saw so many selections of Aloe Vera Juice in Huckleberry Farm : ) I've never been to any other Organic Store so I can't make comparison. But I must say Huckleberry has decent selections, I found everything I needed there hehe
No I never tried Green Tea Mask..what's the recipe? Is it good for oily acne-prone skin? :)
TIA !
I have got to check out Huckleberry Farm, Nanzy! I was actually in town today but only for a short while. Had the visit the baby store, lol. I saw Nuuanu, but only passed the street. The Down To Earth by Pearlridge is quite small, at least to me. Coming from CA and having Whole Foods to run to, it's quite tiny.
I forget the recipe for the Green Tea Mask but you can check out Lizz's post on it here. And it's supposed to shrink pimples so I guess it's good from acne-prone :)
Hmmm then I must say Huckleberry Farm is not so big either :) it's pretty complete tho.
If you ever pass by Hungry Lion or TCBY's or Radio Shack in Nuuanu area, that's the block where Huckleberry Farm is located.
It actually has two stores in the same block, across each other. One store carries skincare, makeups, and vitamins...the other carries foods & daily supply : )
Thank you for the link,Sis.. I will definitely check it out.
Complete works for me Sis Nanzy. I'm thinking I'll take a trip there this week since I have a couple days off. What's the nearest cross-street? I'm not too familiar with Nuuanu except where it meets Nimitz, hah.
according to Google map, the Nuuanu Ave. meets with N School St, you can check the map here
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1613%20Nuuanu%20Ave%2C%20Honolulu%2C%20HI%2096817
Thanks sis! Do I have to get there early or is there enough parking?
oh there are plenty of parking so don't worry hehe hope you can find what ur looking for hehe sounds like a long way from ur place : )
It is quite a ways but it would be a fun fieldtrip :) Thanks for the info love! I hope you're having a great week so far.
i tried this homemade stuff and it isnt working at all.. it looks like watery crap... why is that and what am i doing wrong.. i am trying to use it with the 88 palette. help..
