FOTD: Girl Friendly Gone Smoky

Most looks are copped from some sort of inspiration. This piece of inspiration was courtesy of Angela who was eager to achieve the look. Deciding to take on the challenge, I did my best to recreate my own rendition of the masterpiece.

Of course, because of many facial differentials (and lighting) between the photo and I, I obviously look no where near as polished or smoky as the photo conveys nor do the colors represent themselves the same as they do on lighter skin. Nonetheless, I had fun challenging my inner artist to try and replicate it.

I did use Fafi's Girl Friendly paint pot in this, but Blackground or Painterly paint pot could have easily been substituted, as I just used it purely for a base rather than a color enhancing base. When it comes to really darkening the lashlines for smoky looks, I find that lining my eyes with pencil before placing shadow on the lid helps to give the eyes added intensity. Lining the eyes after eyeshadow is optional to even further the intensity; I opted not to line after in this look. Ok, truthfully I forgot :P

Mid-session, your motherly MAC-dicted friend here had to swing off course for Tykes control, which explains why I have slim creasing going on in the fourth photo below. Since I was unable to finish the look in a single session, my folds decided it was time to go on vacay and send the crease protectors home. Couldn't they at least babysit since they were going to have time off? Hah.

Happy Thursday everyone! Since makeup is all about inspiration, where do you get yours from?

Aloha,
Mrs. Lynne

very nice job! love the close up you get a better look at the color! the full face it looks more like a light blue look.

lovely rendition girl!

I'm constantly inspired to recreate/work on new looks whenever I read through my feeds (with all the makeup bloggers). Otherwise I just sit in front of my dresser and come up with random combinations, though I may have to start paging through my Asian Faces books to recreate some of the looks in there :)

This is really beautiful!!! i agree with the rest, you did a great job! i've probaly said this before, but i really adore your brows!! they frame your face so nicely!! :D

i'm not a very creative person, so i usually get my inspirations from other people's FOTDs and Magazines! ok i'm a copycat! lol! :)

you loook hottt. :] love it sis. :D you're so gorgeous. :D i find my inspiration from random things at random times... like my latest inspirations. :P i don't know how to describe it, but it's almost something just kinda "clicks" and you're like "i want to do this!" well... that's how it is for me. :P LOL. either that or someone else's look inspires me or me just playing with random colors/looks and ending up liking it. :D

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

slvrlips Hey love, thank you so much :) But I think you do a much better smoky eye than I do. I kinda feel like a panda, lol.

How's your week going so far hun?

Xuanie You know I'm always going to hook you up with the close-ups girl ;) Hah. I didn't even think of light blue, but I can definitely see it now! Actually, the silver/gray (Alum e/s) that I used in that particular area is a "mid-tone blue grey with soft blue pearl". So I guess catch it at a certain distance or angle, and it's a completely different color. That's kind cool, hah.

Are you feeling any better sweetie?

mayaari Thanks sis :) I'm going to have to check out that book next time I'm at Borders. Do they have looks that would suit my particular features or skin tone? I don't really consider myself Asian since I'm not much on the yellow side. Got more of daddy's color. Mommy is very fair skinned.

By the way, are you full Filipino?

crazychick Lol. You're too funny crazychick! I think in a sense we're all copycats :) I know I'm guilty of it, hah!

And thank you for the compliment on the brows :)

So do you and the beau have any plans for this upcoming weekend?

Julie Thaaanks hun :) Too bad I can't do a smoky eye on you :( But I'm sure you're just naturally sultry anyways ;)

missjaclynrose Thanks twin! I kind of feel like a panda though. Not used to dark shadow as a lid color.

You and the fam bam have plans this weekend?

yummy411 Thanks mama Kia!

Chris Thanks sis :)

I'm the same way. Majority of the time, I just stare at my stash and play matchmaker. I'll see some looks in magazines, tv, other women, etc... but more or less I just admire. If I remember how it's done, then I'll try it out. Normally mid-way though I tend to venture off course and do something different, lol. I've got makeup ADD :)

You look great!!

I have a question... I saw that you had some swatches of EDM's foundation and I saw that you had the Sandy Medium foundation. My question is, do you think it's more yellowish than pinkish or peach? Because in the swatches pic it looked more like yellowish undertones.
I'm very very very yellow so I figured out to buy the Medium Tan to summer and something lighter to winter (now). What do you think? If you wanna see a pic you can go to my blog, rouaa.blogg.se. It's in Swedish but you can find some pics everywhere. Thank you for your time!

mayaari said...

there are a few looks where they use models with darker skin; the first half of the book talks about the basics (brushes, skincare, how-tos, diagrams, etc.) so there aren't as many looks as i thought there would be - but the decade/period looks look like they'd be a fun challenge :)

and i'm full filipino...well as full as you can get with all the mixed ancestry, haha. my mom has spanish blood, dad had chinese & some french on his side. I'm a pale version of my dad, haha.

You're so cute, posing exactly like your inspiration pic. hehe. Great look! But your look also reminds me that I don't own any silver or grey e/s :( Going blog surfing ALWAYS give me inspiration. See, now you've reminded me that I've always wanted to try out a grey/black smokey eye :)

Shawnta said...

I like it! The close ups do look more like the original then the full face shots but you look gorgeous all the same. I mainly get my inspiration from you guys or just stare at the stuff until I figure out something. I hardly look in beauty mags or things like that to try recreate looks.
Hope you have a good weekend mama Lynne!

I love it..

BTW I actually fixed my blog. I do not know how it was shut off for comments because I did not do it..

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Rouaa Hi Rouaa! Thank you for the compliment :)

In regards to your question, Sandy Medium is more yellow in my opinion. When I do wear EDM, I do use the Sandy Medium as that is the better shade match for me. Sometimes I'll mix that with a bit of Medium Tan, but on it's own Sandy Medium does fine.

Medium Tan in my opinion seems more warmer in color and definitely has pink undertones.

I checked out your pictures on your blog and I'm almost thinking that these two shades may be too dark for you. But then again, you do know your tone better than I do :)

I would like to suggest Winged Butter instead but that is based on your pictures. EDM has a Free Sample Makeup Kit so I would definitely say you should add a lighter color in so you can try it out also. I hope that helps some girl :)

Also, thanks for stopping by! Please let me know if I can help anymore :)

mayaari Sounds like a very interesting book. I'll definitely have to check it out when I make it to Borders next. Thanks for the rec sis!

I've got the same blood as well although I'm not sure about French. I'm actually 1/4 Spanish and I just found that out a few years ago, lol. Do you speak any Tagalog?

Arlene Thanks love! Do you have any plans for the weekend?

Angela You bet girl! I had a lot of fun doing it. I'm always up for a challenge :)

ladyjane Thanks ladyjane :) I'm not very good at the posing. I don't ever think I could do modeling, lol.

I get inspired the same way to play with my makeup. It's all around us!
Can't wait to see your rendition of the smoky eye girl.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Shawnta In real life I think it did look better. You could really make out the gray in the inner crease area. But you know how dumb cameras are, lol.

Speaking of cameras, have you retired your old camera for sure? And what are you and the girls up to this weekend? I hope you're not working ma.

Nessa Thanks hunny!

Seymone Thanks ma.

I was wondering what was going on in your shop. I wanted to leave some love and was looking all over the place for the link. I hope that no one got into your things though. Glad it's fixed :) Yay!!

What do you have going on for this weekend?

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Thanks for sharing that with me ma. I love connecting with other moms :)

LOL, Mrs. Lynne, you're funny. Naturally sultry, haha, yeah right.

I love the smokey eyes look but I need to improve my blending skills before I try it out otherwise I'd look like I had just been punched!

It's the weekend! :] Have a fab weekend.

Julie Smokey eyes, especially when using something dark and matte on the lids, definitely takes some perfecting. I know I don't have it down. I actually felt like I had just rubbed newly laid mascara on my eyes in this one. But glad y'all thought otherwise, llolool.

Have a great weekend also love :)

Elizabeth Yah, you're back!! I'll do your makeup if you do my brows ;) But you'll probably have to tint my a bit darker than what you're using. That's already my natural color, lol.

Lynne, you are so cute! I love your commentary every time. :)

Your rendition is different, but not in a bad way. It's definitely more wearable than the ad! I wouldn't have thought to use Girl Friendly as a base; it looks like it turned out pretty well.

This look is so gorgeous and sultry! Your blending skills are top notch and your strong face can work the simplest to the most dramatic looks. I'd love to see another smoky look from you but maybe try smoking out the bottom liner more because your features can definitely handle it.

Thanks for sharing =)

Mrs. Lynne you're such a cutie :)
Well it's like what I was thinking. That Sandy Medium is more yellow than pink.
I posted my pics in EDM's forum and they told me that I should get Medium Tan and mix it with someting lighter. I really don't know... Because that color is more a summer color for me.

The winged Butter is way too light for me, I think. I wear I.D Medium Beige and it's too light plus it's more pinkisk than yellow, so it makes me look lighter and I hate that. I don't use it that much anymore.

I think that Sandy Medium and maybe a bit light olive to it would do it. But I'm really not sure. The picsa in my blog it a bit lighter as I said so here is a pic of me (http://rouaa.blogg.se/images/14e_feb_1203029494.jpg), don't bother the pose and the eye pic. It's from my FOTD ;) haha

Also I'm asian, but not east asian, so that's why I'm pretty "dark" but still yellow.
I was actually thinking of ordering the I can't belive it kit, because it takes a long time to get the parcel to Sweden. That's why I'm trying to find my match directly instead of trying. haha. Stupid I know ;)

Hope you're haveing a great weekend!

I found a pic of me with no foundation on. Only Face Stockholm blush.
:D

I was thinking of sometihing.. Dom you use the Intensive formula? I heard that the intensive formula is darker than the other formulas. So If I take Sandy Medium in semi-matte and Winged Butter and Light Olve in Intensive I might get the perfekt match. How is Intensive, if you use it? And have you used some other formula?

Thanks again ;)

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Seymone LOL! That is tooo cute. My son wants to wash his hands ALL DAY LONG!! All I hear is "wash?" "wash?"

Oh kids, hah.

Emilee Girl Friendly as a base was just more of a way for the shadows to stick. The color didn't play a factor in the look at all since I went smoky. But the p/p alone is a gorgeous color on the lids. I really like it!

How are you enjoying your Fafi stuff so far?

Cindy Hey Cindy! Thanks for the wonderful compliments, hun :)

I will definitely add the smoky dramatic bottom liner to the request sheet! I always get kind of weirded out when I use dark shadows on the bottom lashline because at the end of the day, I feel like it only makes my dark circles more apparent, lol!!! But always down for a challenge :)

How is your week going so far? Any new makeup toys to play with?

Karen Thanks sis :) I didn't even do anything to my hair except part it on the side, lol.

And I'm so glad the paint pots are no longer lonely. You just can't leave them like that or else they get angry. We all know we'd hate to unleash hate on the paint pots, hah.

Krystle Thanks my love! Thought I'd change it up a bit, hah.

How are you doing, btw?

(g)ezebel Thanks ma!

Lisa Thank you mi'lady! I appreciate it :)

Nilla Cookie You know when I did the pose, I was thinking about the nails and the bracelets, lol.

I'm having a great week Lilan. Hope you are too!

Rouaa You are too funny girl! But I would totally do the same thing in trying to just get the right shade right off the bat instead of waiting. We're girls for goodness sakes. We don't know how to wait, lol!!

Thanks for giving me the link to that picture! Ok, that definitely does show that me and you do have similar skin tones, hah. Btw, your skin looks AMAZING in that picture! What's your secret? You look very polished!!

I think that Sandy Medium would be better for you. What you can do (and this is just a suggestion) is get Sandy Medium and Medium Tan in the "I Can't Believe It Kit (since you get 2 foundations) and then order some lighter foundation colors in the sample kit at the same time so that you can alter the full-size foundations if they're not the right color. That way at least both kits ship out to you and you'll have what you need :)

Ok, just read the next comment :P I think the selections you made might work as well. Why don't you try the Winged Butter and Light Olive for the mini samples? And still keep Sandy Medium and Medium Tan for the other kit? If that works :)

I do have the intensive formula but I ordered all the samples in intensive so I haven't tried the other formulas. So needless to say I wouldn't know if it's darker.

Intensive works fine for me but I still get oily. But I think with any makeup, that's just going to happen anyways.

Anyhow, have a fantastic week Rouaa! You know where I am if you need me :)

Bliss Thanks Bliss! I'm glad you likey :)

How is your week going so far?

psychoexgf Hey girl! Thanks :) You must be the smokey eye pro then!! I need to be getting my tips from you.

Nessa I was wondering what everyone was talking about, lol!

Anonymous said...

Mrs.Lynne haha well yes! We are girls. We don't know what waiting means when it's about make-up. hahaha :)

Thank you for the compliments! I have acne and stuff, but my skin have been better the last 3 weeks. I've been using Lumene Time Freeze face lotion, which isn't that much about wrinkles. It's better as a moisturizer. :) try it! Here at least it's very budget! :)

I e-mailed the support at EDM and they said that I should pick Buttered Tan, Golden Medium, and Winged Butter, but I still think that Sandy Medium is a better shade. So I'm thinking of picking Sand Medium, Medium Tan, Light olive and from the testkit two small jars of Winged Butter to light up the shades. I think that would do it!

Btw... I tried Photo Album and DVR Saturday blush today. Oh my God! They are so pretty. I will put up some swatches later today when the sun is here. And I will write in english so you can look at them if you want to :)
And also, I saw the Long Handled Kabuki! it so soft. I would love to have it on my face all day. Hahaha :)

Btw... It this helps, I'm NC 44 in MACS fluid foundation. They told me that today. Haha :D

Have a wonderful week!
I don't know why I'm up so early. It's 5.17 a.m here :S

haha.

Thank you!

Hey, thank you for being so sweet.

I really appreciate the comment you left on my blog about him. I just am a thinker; I think too much, too often. Sometimes, it's not good. Things are not that bad at all with us. He accepts me for who I am. :]]

I love the look that you tried on your blog. Is it a smokey-eye look with copper-brown tint? :]]

I'm surprised you're not on YouTube making tutorials. ;]]

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Rouaa Hi Rouaa!

Time Freeze face lotion? Sounds very interesting. I'd like to time freeze my skin from the baby years please!!

I think that your EDM choices are very good. At least you'll have bit to mix and match from and I'm sure you're bound to find your match in there.

I did hear that the Long Handled Kabuki is soft! Wouldn't that just be complete pamper treatment if we could have it on our faces ALL DAY?! LOL. I want to get my hands on a flat top buffer brush because I think this will give me better coverage versus the Kabuki I'm using. It works fine, but I have heard that a flat top buffer does work better for mineral application.

You're slightly darker than I am? You really don't look it girl! I'm an NC42 in MAC SFF.

Thanks for the week wishings hun :) I hope your week is going fantastic as well. Btw, do you gravitate more towards a particular cosmetics line in the products that you use?

the Muse Thanks love!! How are you doing today? Anything going on in your neck of the woods?

marasu3 I'm quite the thinker too girl. Sometimes I wish I could just turn my mind off because I really do too much thinking almost making me preventative from trying new things, lol.

But it sounds like you're in a great relationship if he accepts you for you are. Because that is exactly the reason they're with us :)

Thanks for the compliment on the smokey eye. I guess it is kind of like copper depending on the angle but the eyeshadow is actually more of a reddish brown than copper. I always think copper is more orange-y, hah.

And as for YouTube, I'd be on there if I had more time to devote to making videos. Plus, it probably wouldn't be that cool if my Big Tyke was running around in the background, lol!

Have a great day marasu3!

Mrs. Lynne >>

Hi again gorgeous!
Time freeze is so good! they have this stick thing also that looks like a lipstick. You put some of it on your eyes and under. I heard that it was so great!

Yeah I thought that also. I can mix and match as I want to. I tried to place my order yesterday, but the site told me that there is an error and that I should try again. I did try several times. then I discoverd that they took money from me, like 300 dollars or even more, when my order costed about 52 dollars with shipping!
So now I'm angry and I don't know how long it will take to get the money back.

Yeah I heard that the flat top gives a lot of coverage. I'm thinking of getting one when they are back, but now I don't know if I dare to make a new order from EDM. :S
I don't think I'm darker than you. They told me that I could use the NC42 in liguid foundation. Don't know it it was SFF.

Well i use different brand. I like Define-a-lash from Maybelline as a mascara, for eyeshadows I like MAC's pigments, MAD minerals pigments Fyrianne's pigments and some of Make up stores eyeshadows.
I always use FACE Stockholm's blushes, but now I discovered that EDM's blush in Photo album is a wonderful shade! But still... FACE Stockholm's blush in the color wishful is the best. And I use I.D as foundation, but I don't like it. It makes me too light.
I like H&M's loose powder. It's transcluted and it's great! But I want to order the most yellow one from EDM.

What brand do you like the most? MAC, right?

Sorry I didn't make the swatches. I have a lot of things going on, but I will tell you when I make them.

Btw... it's o wierd writing in English. I don't do that as often as I should, so sorry if anything is wrong. haha :)

It's almost weekend so i wish you a great weekend! Take care :)

Rouaa Hey Rouaa!

I'll have to check out this Time Freeze stuff. It sounds quite catchy and promising!

Ooohh, I hope you're able to get your money back. That is quite a bit of money in the hole. Yikes!

I mostly use MAC only for eyeshadows and blush. And Buff'd for foundation. L'Oreal for mascara... and I think that's all that I'm currently using.

And your English is perfect girl! You are doing well. I only know English and I'm horrible at it, lol.

Have a great weekend Rouaa! Take care.

Mrs. Lynne

Yeah do that! Remeber to not take much becaue you will get oily. And let it sink into the skin before you add anything to your face :)

I got my money back. feels good, but I don't know how I should submit my order now. So I will try Paypal and see. Sucks to live in Sweden when it comes to make-up. A lot of things are so hard to get here.
I wanna move to NY ;) haha. But then I will miss my dear mom too much.

I love MAC's pigments! Right now I'm in love with Deep blue green! It's lovely! I actually held this L'Oreal telescopic mascara but didn't buy it. I have to check if it's good first, was the first thing that popped up in my head. So I bought Maybelline Define-a-lash. Great one! This is my 3rd tube. Haha :)

Haha well I know Swedish, English, Arabic, German (not that much anymore) and som french. But I'm only really good in Sweish. hahahaha :)

Have a great weekend you 2 :) It's windy and rainy and stuff here. Yuck! haha :)
Take care :)

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Rouaa You and your mom should both move to NY! Have you ever been?

Would you believe that I don't own any pigments yet? Lol. I know once I start, I won't be able to stop!

I have Telescopic and did a review on it. I like it but I'm starting to have much love for Covergirl Lash Blast! OMG.. I love that one!!!!

I hope the weather clears up hun! Have a great weekend.

Anonymous said...

Mrs.Lynne I wish! haha.. Never been. But I really want to! :D
Haha i have TWO pigments. ONLY two! hahaha...
Did you know that you can order some pigments in sample jars from thebodyneeds.com? and MAD minerals are also super!

I love my difine-a-lash from Maybelline. :D
We donät have Covergirl here. :( I wish we had. :S

I wanna try Too Faced lash injection. haha :)

Have a great week hun!

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Rouaa I did not know you can order samples from there! Thanks for sharing. Omg, speaking of mineral ones, The She Space has some aaaammmaaazing eyeshadows. Since they're mineral, they are on pigment form. Oh drool!!! They are soooo lovely. I don't own any but I've seen swatches and girl, it's got me lemming like cuuurazzy!!

I prefer L'Oreal to CG but had to find out what the hype behind Lash Blast was all about. And I'm so glad I did. If you can order one, I'd say it's worth it in my opinion if you're looking for a full lash look. I have a review that I'll post up once the new site is launch and settled in.

How are your lashes normally? I have pretty long lashes, but not full and they're fairly straight. You should see my Big Tyke's lashes though. I look at them everyday wondering what they would look like with mascara on them... *dreamy sigh*

Thanks girl. I hope you're having a great week also!

Anonymous said...

Mrs. Lynne no prob. hehe. It's so wonderful that you can ordet samples from TBN. You can choose so many colors!
Oh no. Do't order from The She space. ok the colors are damn amazing, but they don't last for long plus some of them wont eyen stick on your eye, even with Urban Decay primer Potion on!!
Most of the blues sucks. One green, Next stop OZ works, and I love the highlighter Touched of truth. That's it. The last ones, the blacks with color sparkles sucks totally! They turn grey on your skin and the sparkel never show up!

Hm... i don't know if I can order CG. We'll see if I can find it. hehe...

My lashes are long and thick. But too straight! They were curly before, but then I started to curl them even more so now they are straight. That sucks. This is how they look.

have a great week!! ;D

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Hi Rouaa,

Oh no. The She Space didn't work for you? Bummer! But they swatch sooo nicely :(

Girl you have some crazy lashes!! Gimme, gimme, gimme. I'm so jealous. Mine are long but not as long as yours. You have such nice whispy wings *sigh*. Those are exactly what my son's would look like if I was to put a eyelash curler to them, lol. Have you ever tried putting Vaseline on your lashes at night? It's supposed to strengthen them and keep them in shape.

Talk to you soon girl!

Anonymous said...

Nope. Some of them worked ok, but most of them did not. they didn't stick on my crease. not with primer, for them selves or with no make up on. Wierd. haha. i would rather buy some MAC samples from the body needs, acutally.

haha thank you! i love the shape of your eyes and lashes! :D
Mina are so damn straight now. It's the curlers fault. haha.
No I tried olive oil thou. it works, but I wanna but FACE Stockholm's nourishment thingy. Looks like mascara. It's almost like hear treatment. You put it on at night before going to bed. :D
I want it so damn bad! Haha :D

take care :D swedish hugs to you! hahaha

Mrs. Lynne, MakeupFix.net said...

Very interesting Rouaa. I doubt I'll be making an order anytime soon. I like to want, want, want, but never order because I'm an impulser :)

Is Stockholm a Swedish brand? Sorry, I'm clueless, hah. But I know you always mention them so I'm wondering if they have that here in the states. Ok, I'm just being lazy to look it up, hah. I hope you don't mind me asking you :)
