The following trial is based on NYX Chrome Eyeshadow in Platinum applied with Homemade Mixing Medium (left eye) and NYX Chrome Eyeshadow in Platinum applied with MAC FIX+ (right eye). Results for this base trial are reported as of the end of the day, unless stated othewise. Directional cues are according to how you see the pictures on your screen (your left, not my left). The base trial was taking from the Valentine's Day For Robots FOTD.
I don't own any MAC pigments (shocker, huh?) so I decided to base trial this on NYX Chrome Eyeshadows which are in pigment form - and CHEAPER!! There is hardly a difference between using a Mixing Medium (whether its homemade or MAC's) or MAC FIX+ in regards to using them to foil the pigments as the main ingredients in both are water and glycerin. FIX+ contains additional vitamin and minerals, along with a blend of green tea, chamomile, and cucumber whereas the Mixing Medium has no extras. But for the purpose of foiling pigments, there is no difference in which you choose to use, in my opinion.
After seeing the results of this base trial, I did a another base trial using the same product method but over Urban Decay Primer Potion. Be sure to stay tuned to see the results of that base trial!

Color payoff
Although you can definitely tell that the color sank in as the day wore on, the payoff is still rather incredible.
Crease Factor
Unfortunately, in the world of foiling, incredible color payoff doesn't equate itself to being crease-free.
Ease of use/blending
It's fairly easy to mist your brush with Mixing Medium then turning to the pigment pot to pick up some color. Even after I placed MAC Electra e/s over NYX's Platinum Chrome Eyeshadow, blending was not a problem.
Tools
Firm bristles brushes like the MAC 242 or 252, or the MAC 239 will work also.
Using it this way is great if you have...
Dry to normal eyelids!
Using it this way is not so great if you have...
Oily eyelids unless you pair it with another base to combat creasing.
Overall...
Even though there was a crease factor associated with this base trial, I'm in love with anything that has an intense color payoff. I think that by pairing this with Urban Decay's Primer Potion will work wonders for me.

Are the NYX chrome shadows anything like the Metal-X eyeshadows? I saw them in the stores, but didn't bother picking them up since they were HUGE.

hi there...I'm always a lurker in your blog and it's very informative, I like your base trials, it's very helpful for us readers. I dont know if you did a base trial on using a visin or any eyedrops vs mixing medium. I heard a lot of girls are using visin for foiling eyeshadows but I've never tried using it. so I'm kinna curious about how it will work and if it will last all day like the mixing medium does, if you can do a base trial about it, it will be great but if not its ok I still love your blog...thanks =)

The NYX Chrome Shadows are in pigment form whereas the Metal-X eyeshadows are a cream eyeshadow. The NYX Chome Shadows are very similar to MAC pigments. I honestly would tell anyone to pass on the Metal-X eyeshadows because they are a huge pain, unless patience is your specialty.
slvrlips Hey girl! NYX's Chrome Eyeshadows are a great alternative next to MAC pigments. Although MAC has a better color selection, you can find some good ones in NYX.
That's too bad there's not a store near you. But at least it is only a click away ;)

I'm glad that the base trials help out! I have heard of Visine used as a mixing medium but have not yet done a base trial on it. Thank you for the request. And girl, I will definitely incorporate that into my next base trial :) I will try to get it out this week provided that my tykes are under good behavior, hah.
